I am serious about going, BUT, I can only go when my kids are on Spring Break in '09, so if you go in '08, I'll have to read about it, but if you do both, try to schedule it for like the 3rd week in March '09. I am sailing a hobie 20 with my son, my wife, daughter and youngest son want to take the Ferry over.
It is truly, one of those things I have to do before I die. (I just hope its not JUST before I die, of HOW I die)

jeez CW, you're like a little girl with a skinned knee. If it's a reach out and back to Catalina you're going to be cookin' on the twinky. My fx sucks on a reach.

I am kinda jumping in late here, but last Spring break a close friend and I loaded 4 days worth of camping gear on my 5.2 and sailing close to 100 miles along the coast of tx and then back. It was a blast!!

if you want a short warm up there is a 16 mile hike down the cali coast . moss landing challenge. santa cruz beach at surf city cats to moss beach yacht club. its a nice run sometimes about 1 1/2 hours last year about 5 but wind gods didn't smile on us. its in late august i think.

The Moss Landing Challenge is an awesome race! Everyone should come out and do it once. The party afterward is the best. The wind is usually 15-20 from the northwest, pretty much dead downwind on the layline. You can choose the beach rout or the outside.

Hey Rich,

The reason we placed so poorly in that race last year is that you were following me and I was checking out the whales...not necessarily the fastest rout to sail, but I saw an Orca!

I'll call you tomorrow! I promise.

Say Karl,
I was looking at the chart in your original post and noticed that there were 4 legs (instead of 3 ) in your trip or there was some urgent need to bear south/east during one of the legs. Is this the case or is something else going on? Seeing that this is about a 450 mile sail round trip, how long do you guesstimate it will take?

In between those two islands. I'd have to talk to someone who actually knows but it looks like there is sand popping up everywhere. With that being the longest leg my thinking was that we might be going through there in the dark. less chance of hitting ground. If you didn't have to tack much, or at all, and your real good at staying on course the trip should be about 200 miles one way.

Just re-read your post. The drop to the south is to hit a town to stay for the night.

Karl - sounds like an amazing trip. I would say yes you should definitely do it. And yes, you are stupid.

Karl, you better strap a rod holder on troll along the way. Those are some of the best fishing waters the world has to offer.

lets seee throw one of these bad boys on

Anddd see if you can't hook into one of these

Or if you're really lucky.. you may even have a shot at one of these

Think of the publicity you could bring to the FX-1 by pulling one of these up side the boat and use that as your incentive.

I would be down to go just to fish the whole way. May add a couple hours to the trip, but well worth it.

Your FX sucks on a reach? I don't know the boat. Should I assume that is a joke?

I haven't checked with a GPS but it sure feels slow on a reach. It likes to go up and down wind.

Wish I had a Polar Diagram to see for sure. Could be I just don't know how to trim a uni either. With the spin up you can haul the mail, but it doesn't take much and you're grossly overpowered reaching with a chute.

I've been reading of Gary and Bill's excellent adventures on the Catalina Island trip for years now, and would love to tag along.
If this actually becomes a "plan" for 09, please include me in the "planning" maybe Chris can travel thru Denver and we can caravan from there. I don't have a clue as to who would be "foolish" enough to sail with ME, but I am sure, that between now and then, I can find someone that can forget to cross stupid off of their "list of things to do".
Actually, having just sailed from Grenada to the Bahama's on a cat, ( a 42 foot cruising cat) but a cat none the less <Grin> it doesn't sound all that bad to me. I mean really guys, we sailed over 72 hours on one tack, and even got a little lazy. Halfway thru day 3 I suggested that maybe we ought to gybe and the owner said "yeah, maybe tomorrow"
Anyway, the original proposal sounds very do-able and would be a lot of fun if the weather conditions were just right. Ya can't beat "Tradewinds Sailing"

Count me in. I'll bring some of the guys from Oklahoma and pick up Stephen in Denver. Maybe we can talk Judy into going.
