Hey. Any swag (merchandise) expected to be available for the 2008 Hobie 17, 18, Tiger NA Championships. I won't be there (I'd need to put more money into my boat then I have budget for this year) but as an 18 sailor I'd like a nice shirt or two.

I fully expect we'll kill all AT LEAST an hour at the border both ways. We'll have just a ton of crap piled onto the trailer and truck and we'll look like the Beverly Hillbilly's to most people.

I'm second guessing my plan to bring a motorcycle and my jetski. It won't be worth the added complications I'm guessing. Plus the inevitable thrashing I'd get about bringing a jetski.

I'd bring them!

They rent them on the lake for about a gazillion dollars per 1/2 hr.
You'll be kicking yourself if the wind doesn't come up and we have a down day.

Besides, if you bring them, you'll guarantee the rest of us have a strong wind regatta. :P

Harry brings up a good point. I'm not positive but Certificate of Origin's reside at the Hobie Factory in Ocenaside, CA. This is especially true for Tiger's (imported from France) and newer 16's (hulls imported from Australia).

I/we learned a hard lesson when retrieving our Tiger's from the Singapore Worlds in New York City. The two boats shipped to Singapore were bought and paid for through the Hobie dealer network in the US. But because we didn't fill out one little US Customs ownership form when the boats were shipped to Singapore, we all had to pay import duties to get our boats out of hock. The Customs guys thought we were importing the boats from France (origin of manufacture). Complicating the matter was that two boats left the US and six returned. Since we could'nt prove US ownership we had to pay duties. That whole episode still leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

Crossing into and out of Canada with a boat (you're not shipping in a container but rather pulling a trailer) isn't a big issue. Just be sure to have your boat's current registration and leave the country with the same number of boats you entered with. The customs guys on both sides of the border keep computer and photographic records of all who cross.

Moyra.. check with Dan Borg... he's coming from TO... Don't know if he is stacking.. can stack... not sure...

and it's really not that far... only 4300 km (we travelled 4600 to Geneva last summer, about 48hrs driving)

I heard a rumor of a 8-10 boat Hobie owned trailer. If this were available, a possibility could be a stop in Syracuse and Toronto to pick up boats, or just one stop in Kingston at the Olympic harbor???
All folks going, would pitch in to rent and drive a vehicle to pull it straight thru.

this might make the event a more possible (and environmental) option. on the other hand - knowing cat sailors thrive on kaos, this might just be to hard to organize - :)

Moyra- Contact Harry Murphey. He is the one organizing it on the east coast. Harry is going to pull it to Clear Lake Iowa, drop off some youth boats, and pic up some midwest boats for the trip to BC. In Clear Lake I'm going to be pulling it to BC.

Here's the breakdown I came up with for a rough idea of costs from Iowa to BC. My estimate is that it will cost me $.605 per mile. Across 4000 miles that works out to a total of $2420.

7 boats $357/boat
6 boats $416/boat
5 boats $484/boat

On the trailer I think 6 boats can stay assembled. The other two have to be disassembled.

At this point it is all tentative, and the prices I'm using some what determined by fuel costs. I used $3.75 as a cost per gallon for fuel, which may change. I also used 10mpg as a estimate for mileage. We "SHOULD" be able to get at least 12mpg if not 13mpg. I used a conservative number. The way things will probably work is that I will charge for mileage, and fuel seperately. Fuel cost being the only real variable in my numbers. So this is something rough to work with, and the actual cost may be marginally less. Depends on what the energy criminals do to us this summer.

Vehicle costs, not including fuel.
My pickup new $40,000. Lifespan 200,000 miles = $.20/mile
Oil Change. $50 /divided by 5000miles = $.01/mile
Tires. $880 / divided by 60,000miles = $.02/mile

That gets us a grand total of $.23 per mile not including fuel.
Add in fuel at $3.75/gal @ 10mpg thats another $.375 per mile bring us up to $.605 per mile. Which is cheap shipping. It costs about a dollar a mile to move one car on a semi/car hauler. The trailer, gear, people, and truck should weigh less than 16,000lbs and should be able to get at least 12mpg. I averaged 12.7 going to New York last year with about the same amount of weight, but with a flat nosed enclosed trailer. I don't know if the aerodynamics will be worse or better with the Div 4 trailer.

Just to make it perfectly clear - the trailer is not owned by Hobie Cat or the Hobie Class Association.

It is owned by HCA Division 11 and they are responsible for it.

It is also set up primarily to carry Hobie 16s. It does not have hull cradles for Tigers or other boats with tender undersides.

Karl is correct about how many boats it can carry - 6 fully assembled, max of 4 disassembled. In reality, it has never carried more than 8 boats, since that maxes out the storage capacity of the sail boxes on the lowest level (masts go on the mid-level).

Division 11, not 4. I was really bad at math in grade school, especially Division :P

Hi,

Just checked in on this thread today. Karls numbers are pretty accurate except I just put diesel in the Co's semi truck at $3.95/gal yesterday, and in my calculations we had put in a $100.00/boat trailer fee to go to Div 11 to off-set maintenence costs and capital investment/replacement cost.

My plan was to go west from the Philly area on the Pa "green stamp", through Ohio picking up I-80 west to Iowa. I would need to look at the possiblity of picking boats up in Michigan somewhere I would think ... but anything is possible. Please note that the biggest issue is on the return trip as the trailer needs to arrive back in Philly area on Tues Sept 2nd to be unloaded ... reloaded w/ H-16s ... and returned to Clear Lake Iowa no later then Sat Sept 6th for the H-16NA's. It is a very tight schedule.

I have had no response from the "Juniors" at this point. Would you Canucks be going to Rodchester??? Maybe we could arrange to pick-up the boats there in early Aug and return w/ them to the Philly area to be loaded on the trailer. Another alternate is for the Tigers to come the "The Wildwood Classic" this year. It is going to be a GREAT event w/ camping on the beach @ Morey's Amusement Pier. There is NO place that I know of on the East Coast that has a regetta on a "Ocean Front Beach" that allows camping "On-site"listening to the waves !!!! That would be the best way ... we could load up the trailer there and leave a week later for "the Coast".

Let me know what you think, my E-mail is listed in my profile.

Harry

Oh Yah, Matt is quite correct on the trailer's confirguration. Years ago I learned that rollers (on Trailers) SUCK !!! They put big black marks/streaks and divots in the bottoms of all boats except the Hobie 16 !!!

I think I will propose to the division to replace ALL the rollers w/ carpeted bunks made from Pressure-treated 2"x8"s bolted to the crossmembers permenately. In the pictures of last years trip to Calif they had to put all sorts of temperary padding on the crossbars anyway for the masts and dissassembled boats.

Make sure you have all your documentation for your boat in order as I would hate to have to call you and say "We had to leave your boat at the border" ....

Harry

Here's a cunning stunt. It could be all B.S. but there has been alot of talk that gas will be well over $4.00 this summer, and diesel closer to $5.00. Yaaaaaay, I love living in poverty for the sake of the energy criminals.
