Doh! Was also testing out my new Digital Hero 3 camera (thanks to Karl for tipping me to that one!).

Not very exciting (still messing with settings and placement) but proves that this camera doesn't have the problems with vibration that the Oregon Scientific cam does (the second part of the video is wrist-mounted and is me madly sheeting a few times with no video snow or bad fuzzing).

So, some things were proved this last weekend:

1) Columbia River water is really cold this time of year.
2) Plastic rudders that have been in the sun for 30 years suck.
3) The Digital Hero 3 is a darn good camera for the money (~$110).
4) You can indeed, with skill, tack a 16 with no rudders in 15 mph winds and chop using only the sails, and sail juuuuust low enough to bring it back to the beach at a broad reach.

Hopefully some better video (and more sailing with all equipment functional!) as the year goes on.

At the '73 Nationals at Key Biscayne we broke 3 in one day, including 2 at once. Keep in mind these were NEW then!

The Hobie parts supply room at the hotel ran out so many broke.

They finally let us use the fiberglass aftermarket blades that Chris Chistensen made. I think that was the beginning of the rule change to allow any rudder.

I don't think the out-of-gas routine would have been particularly romantic - pitching up and down in the chop and getting hosed in the face with 40-degree water.

The song is not the one I thought I picked (it's a Colin Hay solo remake of one of his old Men At Work songs) but since it's just a test video I didn't bother remaking it.

The boat is a 'freebie' that was picked up by a fleetmate. There are some parts floating around including one fiberglass rudder - might find two (probably non-matching) and have something that won't snap. The hulls are in great shape (besides one being half-painted in a horrific shade of orange) and the tramp is fine; the sails are odd - the white fabric is in fantastic, crispy shape but the colored panels are dead, and the thread in all cases is not doing well. Ah well, what do you want for free?

I'll chime in on the memory cards. I buy 99% of all computer equipment from Newegg. Everything is so much cheaper there.

I just bought this stick of flash memory and have been happy with it so far.

Kingston stuff is usually pretty good, and if you look at the combo on that page they've got a card reader that you can buy "bundled" with it as well. $20 + $5 shipping for a 2gig card and a card reader is a pretty good deal.

It's amazing how cheap memory has gotten isn't it? I remember when a 1gb hard drive was a big deal, (back in the DOS days). Now you can get a 160gb hard drive for $150.

Lot cheaper than that if you look around... I just saw a 750GB external for $159.

I'm about to put a TB on my desk at home. "Terabyte"... 1,000,000,000,000 bytes.... Sheesh... My first PC had a 12MB drive.

Crazy.
