Odd question, since it seems that most people prefer alum masts over comptip - would it not be easier to have a coating on the outside of the mast, similar to electricians' screwdrivers.

Weight would be minimal, leaving structural integrity.

I am not sure the coating would work. The voltage on the lines that the mast is likely to contact is many times higher that an electrician would contact with his screwdriver. Anyway, with such a high voltage I would think that the line could arc through the coating.

Also, any metal part on the mast would now be electrically connected to the rest of the boat, not being insulated by the comptip. So if a line were to come into contact with say, the mast head (assuming it wasn't coated)the forestay or shrouds you would have a problem.

For Hobie One Design racing, yes.

Many clubs will allow non-Comptip Hobies to race in a handicap fleet.
