This is a question that has been put forth at the US SAILING Spring Meeting.

Lower membership fees?
Goodies?

Really - what would it take for those of you who are not US SAILING members to join?

Please keep this somewhat serious - information here will go back to Jim Capron (US SAILING President) and the US SAILING Board of Directors.

You mean in addition to a full reversal of the US Sailing policy to eliminate a catamaran from the Olympics?

What is the difference between US Sailing and American Sailing Association?

I became an ASA member only because the school where I learnt to sail was with ASA. Membership was a default thing.

I can't say I get a lot from my ASA membership, but this is probably because I simply don't know what to do with it.

So what does US Sailing do better or different that ASA?

As a Hobie sailor, Matt, What does US sailing do for me?

I think a lot (most) Hobie sailors don't even know what US sailing does or is.

You're right Jeremy, I had to look in a Hobie Hotline for the US Sailing advertisement, I don't now what reminded me that it's in every issue, I read it once and have ignored it since.

So, I pulled out an issue and here's what you get listed in order(BTW, Individual membership is $40...hmm, more than my HCANA membership)

A $10 discount on annual membership dues (what a minute...is that next year? Or, is it like the check we'll get from the IRS?)

Discounted entry at every regatta that is hosted by a member or club organization that uses the USSA insurance program. (reminds me of the middle aged guy and his teenage daughter that showed up to race his old Hobie 16, he proudly whips out his USSA card at the registration table and asked for his discount...sorry, no discount available at the Hobie sanctioned events)

A $20 West Marine coupon with each renewal. (so...when I renew next year that's when I get my coupon, wow it's like money in the bank. Too bad West Marine stores are like Wal-Mart to boat shops and a contributor to many Hobie dealerships closing. BTW, there isn't a West Marine within 3 hours of where I live.)

A free Racing Rules of Sailing book. (Ahhh...it's free!!! Wait, it cost $40. I purchase Dave Perry's "Understanding Racing Rules of Sailing", think I paid $25)

Eligibility for USSA's outstanding one-design insurance for Hobie Cat-manufactured catamarans. (someone enlighten me, last time I went through this I was frustrated because, although US Sailing has a website jam packed with a myriad of information, it has to be THE most difficult website in the world to navigate. Use the "search" function and you get kicked into google...nice. Anyway, isn't the only "Hobie" under the program the 16? When I tried to double check this again just now I got kicked into an insurance company website and quit trying. Never once did I see the covered OD boats listed anywhere. I did see talk of a racing deductible? Come on, my agent knows that's all I do with our 20 is race, of all the perils, of all my racing goodies and writes my policy, with a smile, every year for $100.)

Member discounts on USSA gear, clothing and accessories. (polo shirt or blazer? decisions, decisions)

Why doesn't the Hobie calss association up our dues 5 or 10 bucks and throw it over to USSA. I'm sure our trusted servants know how to communicate with these people and can keep them informed of our needs.

I see no advantage for a weekend warrior Hobie racer to be a member. So at that point it becomes more like a charitable contribution decision for me, will it give me peace of mind?

Maybe I'll stop paying the "topcat" HCA membership and give some of my money to US Sailing. [img]http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/images/smilies/rofl[1].gif[/img]

I think the average sailor sees no return in the investment. Given a choice between supporting a "national" organization and a "local" one, my opinion is that it's always better to support the local one.

That said, I don't belong to either the local windsurfing club or US Windsurfing because of rampant political b.s. in both organizations.

Looking from the point of view of US Sailing...

The sailing world is dominated by monoslugs. Asking "what do I get out of joining" is a bad question, it makes us seem too individualistic and unorganized. The more catamaran support at national levels the better representation we get. If we want to further our multihull obsessions then we need to show US Sailing we're not just pissing around.

Oh and I want a t-shirt and a poster!

But to be fair, I'm more of a fan of breaking out of everything at national level and creating our own multihull organization... but I don't see that happening so lets just take US Sailing by force

Honest representation.

The multihull sailors were duped. Never again will this organization get a dime from me. Scratch that- I will join again when the "representatives" that said they supported multihulls and then voted together against multihulls are barred from racing sailboats of any kind any where US sailing is present for a reasonable period (not less than ten years). This is a fitting punishment as the US sailing official position was not followed. They took it upon themselves to missrepresent all US sailing members. If these people are allowed to remain in the sport, it does no part of sailing any good and makes a fool out of anyone that continues to support US Sailing.

I hadn't raced seriously in years yet I was a constant US sailing member because they help to insure events/clubs, keep rules up to date with changes like gates, starting signals, penalties, and international competition. All of these positive aspects died with the vote to eliminate multihull sailing.

:D For easier access to information on US SAILING:
Golden Anchor discounted membership for Multihull sailors, http://www.ussailing.org/multihull/ga_form.asp
Alter Cup, http://www.ussailing.org/championships/adult/USMHC/
Youth Multihull Championship
http://www.ussailing.org/championships/youth/multihull/

And Sailorship, A new program to provide Financial Aid to Junior Sailors, see http://www.ussailing.org/pressreleases/ ... rships.asp

There are many reasons to be an active member of US SAILING. The above are just a few.

I really hate writing checks anymore. It's so much easier to do it online.

But when I saw I could save $10 :D by joining through the Golden Anchor Program; and that I could join as a registered multihull sailor :D ; my checkbook was dusted off and I was sending John Williams a little something in the mail.

I used my last stamp too.
