 It's finally time! My 1990 H18 needs to have the outhaul shock cord replaced in the boom and I'm staring at it, thinking that I can cut it and fish it through, then replace it without drilling out the end cap. Can I do this?

Personally, I'd just take the end cap off. It's quite easy- drill off the heads of the rivets, drive the shanks through with a punch and pull the end cap off. Re-install with aluminum rivets. Much easier than trying to fish the lines through.

Did the same thing as srm.
An alternative to AL rivets is self tapping S/S screws (#10).

Fishing is fine.

If you decide to drill out the rivets on the end cap, read in other parts of the Forum about drilling Monel.

If you are sailing in fresh water, I guess Aluminum rivets are fine, but not for salt water. Stick with Monel from the dealer.

Remember to check the delrin wheels of the outhaul car, they are often worn as well.

Finally, some sun and warmth today. The snow piles melted down to about 2 feet high. Club opens on April 26th, but we won't start sailing until mid May.
