Having had not been able to tack efficiently before, I wanted to do a complete rudder overhaul. The previous owner had said that the H16 was extremely difficult to sail solo, so I was expecting hassles. Not knowing the H16 I took for granted the hard steering. Should have tried another H16 to see difference.

When I read on the numerous posts on tacking and setting up of rudders, I slipped up on not checking the actual rudder movement when down, using the info on setting rudders in the up position.

Sailing solo I sat most of the time in line with the mast stay so could not actually see the rudder angle, plus dirty dam water didn't help. Taking a kid out on the water, I could see the rudders were moving backwards at a 30 to 45 deg angle.

After adjusting rudders, etc tacking is simple and easy, plus the benefit of easy effort steering, which was very hard before. The tiller extension was bent in many places, that should have been a dead give away.

Oiling all points on the rudder system works wonders. After adjusting rudder break away etc, rudders still have slop but work like they should, rudder overhaul can now be done at a later stage. Tested in light wind and up to 20 knots. What tacking problem.

Found 3 cats in a similar predicament.
