beach storage

Hello all, I plan on keeping my H16 on the beach this year. Just looking for any info on how to secure it to the beach along with the beach wheels so they don't get blown over or stolen. Thanks for any help.

I recall this basic suggestion read on this forum. I will kind of expand upon it:

Take two 5 gal pails, drill a good size holes near the top of each one, but no closer than say 2" from top. Don't be tempted to use those handles instead. Run a length of cable or chain thru to make a loop, and splice together.

Place one bucket aft and one fwd near pylons, opposite corners, idealy closest to and in line with prevailing wind direction. Start digging! Make sure holes are deep enoungh to place bucket well below grade, so that once burried only small loop of chain/cable is exposed, (be sure splice is burried too). If it is really stormy/windy where you are, use four!

Once you have your beach anchors in place, simply attach tie downs to the chains, and maybe use some sort of locking cable around a pylon to one of the chains.

Not so sure about the beach wheels. Do they slide under the tramp? If so, tie off to pylons, and drill a hole (on beach wheel shaft or somewhere) to run a bicycle locking cable to one of the pylons.

Won't be theft proof, but will slow them down.

For the beach wheels I do something similar to what was described in the last post. I was lucky enough to find a bike cable that has a loop at each end. I wrap it around the axel and pass one loop through the other. Then take the free end and lock it to the dolphin striker.

If you are just trying to keep joyriders from fooling with your boat, that is probably enough; they can't use the wheels to move the boat, and can't drag the boat because of the wheels.

Buy 2 earth anchors and turn them into the ground front & back. Tie a line from the front and rear crossbar to each anchor, keep the line tight. Get two bike cables and locks, wrap around the two crossbars and lock to the earth anchors to keep people from moving it.

This worked well on my H-18 last summer.

Go to your nearest "Arborist/Tree Surgeon/Climber Supplier they have "Ground Anchors" that are used when planting trees. You can get them in lengths from 1' w/ 2" disk to 3' w/ 4" disk ... the softer the soil the bigger the disk and longer shaft required.

Install one under the front crossbar ... one under the rear crossbar ... I've seen boats walk/rotate on a single ground anchor ... I was amazed!!!

To install use a 36" long "breaker bar and a section of pipe to increase the leverage ... I "pre-dig a one foot hole w/ a posthole digger then put the ground anchor into the hole put the dirt back in to help the anchor to "bit" ... then put the breaker bar through the "eye" on the shank and start walking in circles ... you will get DIZZY ...

At my local arborist supply they start a $4 ea and go to approx $12 for the 36" w/ 4" dick I think

At my Yacht club my boat is stored on a "grass lawn" so I make sure to drive my anckors below grade so they can cut the lawn when my boat is "on the road" at a regetta. They get real angry when they hit them w/ the mowers. I've found some Crab Trap/Lobster Trap floats that I tie to the anchors to mark them ... I also have my boat up carpeted blocks so I do not get "gelcoat blisters" and you can use a weed wacker to cut the grass around the boat to keep the YC looking nice.

Screw in "dog anchors" are not long enough to hold a boat down in a good storm ... they pull out especially if the ground is wet from rain

These anchors are also good for hold down your "pop-up" awnings on the beach also .... you know the kind 10'X10' or 12'X12' ...

Thanks for all the advice and information about putting my 16 on the beach. I'm getting back to Jersey on Wednesday and it's going on the beach then. I think i'm going to try the one strap in the front left pylon and another on the rear right. I have access to cinder blocks, so i'm going to use those as anchors. thanks again for all the replies and information.

I have had 2 bent masts in the last 2 years... definately tie it down. however I have 3 hobie buddies on the same lake (lake Huron) who have never had a problem. A used H16 mast is running $500. I wish I had asked your question 2 years ago. And I wish i was luckier
