Not two weeks after this thread was started I kept meaning to tape up the Ring Dings and never did check them. Guess what .... Mast came down the only possible reason is the ring ding worked itself out.

A week after I posted it a friend of mine, also with a H16, rigged his boat on the beach and was ready to push off when he noticed a ring ding missing, apparently pulled out by his cat trax rope wrapped around the shroud adjuster. I'm a big fan of tape now. I initially tried electrical tape but my beach wheels also chafed it loose right away. I'm now using self fusing electrical tape. Maybe I should start tying the beach wheels to the front pylons.
