Traveler Kit for the Wave

I went back to look at the rivets again and to try to peen over the edges. Holding the rivet up to the hole, it looks like the rivets have a larger diameter than the beveled holes. I had no luck in trying to peen over the edges, they are not that thick and there is no where for the material to go as they are sitting flush to the track.

I did modify the traveller sloping the leading edges. My hope is that the traveller will more easily clear the rivets. I will let you know how well this works after I give it a try on the water...

I used the traveler in the Pamlico Sound off Cape Hatteras last week. It is a great addition to the boat. The rivets mentioned previously did not cause any problems.

I spent last week sailing on a lake in Maine. This time, the traveller continually hung up on the rivets. I suspect that the coarser sand present on the beach was the issue versus my more positive experience in Hatteras. I generally had to let the sail out to generate enough side force to run the traveller down the track and then sheet in when the traveller reached the desired position. The traveller is still a significant improvement however.

Sand in the track? Yep. That would cause issues. You need to blow or wash it out before sailing.

Anybody got pics of thier traveller or install? I am strongly considering this upgrade, may ask Santa for one . I have the classic model, so I will need to add lacing posts, and get rid of the velcro straps. A pic will help determine lacing post mounting position.

2007 Hobie Wave

There is some nice information here that maybe requires this post to be brought forward, hence this post... A second thread exists since this thread started... pictures and other installation steps have been posted.

Not having seen all the parts of the KIT yet, I'm still waiting for a copy of the installation guide as well as pictures of the actual finished product showing details of the rotating cleat installation, the mainsheet attachment, etc all together. e.g. it sounds like we need to start by removing the current eye on the crossbar?

Ooops! My bad, I am the author of the 2nd thread. I should have done a search first!

I do know for a fact that you will need to remove the current eye, but don't do it until you have the kit! The nuts will fall off inside the crossbar, leaving you with no way to attach your main block unitl the traveller is mounted. I guess that goes without saying.

Maybe site admin can amend my thread to the end of this one? Basically combine these two together?

When riveting inside the traveler track, you need to both modify the gun and use a spacer. The "new" tracks are deeper than in years past so the spacer is needed to push the head of the rivet down as the shank pulls up. The modification of the gun is needed because the spacer causes the teeth of the gun to be out of range for the short shanks of the rivets. you need to file the sides of the gun to slip between the top of the traveler track. I have used a couple of small washers for the spacer or one small nylock nut. both work well. This will keep the heads of the rivets from being in the way of the traveler.
