During training on of our Club H18's, the student let go of the hotstick during a tack, and it got jammed under a rudder. The waves and the speed 'bent' the stick (over 90 degrees) just above where it attaches to the tiller cross bar. The carbon fibre is holding, but there are severe cracks from the cross bar to where the stick disappears inside the upper (outer) part of the stick. We have a spare 'inner' stick, (don't ask.)

How do we 'separate' the inner from the outer? It seems to be frozen. I've tried to lock it in a vice and unscrew the upper/outer part, no luck.

For this past weekend, temps at 80F plus, winds SW at 12 - 18 kts, we taped it so that the edges would not splinter and hurt hands. Now I am thinking what else can we do? Cut it off? How?

There is a roll pin in the end of the stick that has to be driven out to seperate the inner and outer parts of a "Hot stick".
You can repair the one you have. Get the form back and drill a hole and fill the inside with epoxy just above the break. Stand it staight up(repair down) let dry and then wrap the outside with epoxy and cloth about 4-6 inches up. Sand to match the diameter of the outside portion and you have a hot stick that works again. It will now be 6 inches longer when closed of course, but still much shorter than a stock stick. I have fixed a few this way and they work fine.

Hobie Sailors are helpful, appreciate this.

If you ever attended a Voodoo Winds regatta at our neighbours, Nepean SC, we are three miles west of them. We welcome all visitors.

Thanks and good winds
