Does the well plug serve any function other than keeping things from falling in the water?
Does the Revolution perform better when paddling with the well plug in?

Yes... The Drive Well plug smooths out the bottom of the yak so that you should get less drag when paddling.

Try paddeling without the well plug or the drive unit in place. I was amazed how much water rushes in....enough to fill my seat :) .

Of course, your glide ratio would improve noticeably. Technically, since the drivewell is forward of the center of lateral resistance, it would track slightly better. Whether you would notice it is another matter.

You should get pretty good tracking with the rudder down and neutral (where it acts as a skeg) and make small heading corrections by tilting the hull slightly away.

If you knew ahead of time that you were paddling exclusively, you could tape up the seam to streamline the hull bottom -- the plug could even be omitted in that case (slit the tape if you need to drain through the well):

I do this on to the front cockpit on the tandem when going solo -- works great! 8)

Thanks Roadrunner, Unfortunately I never paddle exclusively. The only reason I paddle is because it’s to shallow to pedal. It is also too shallow to use the rudder as I am on a flat with oysters. After your response and in my case I do not think that using the plug would be worth the effort of putting it in. Thanks for your great posts, you are always saving me time on the water!
