What is the best way to reatach the sail numbers 3 are comming off a 1979 H16 stored for a long time.

Those numbers are sticky back dacron. If the adhesive is giving up, the dacron is probably not far behind.

That said, you could try using seamstick. It's a double sided tape used in sail construction. Places that sell RC sailboats sometimes carry it. Any sail loft will have it. I probably wouldn't personally use any kind of glue out of a tube or can.

I just used contact cement. Try to find one that is water resistant (like for jetski footpads) and follow the directions. Don't try to glue parts and pieces as the new adhesive will tend to wrinkle the numbers. Remove the entire number and try to clean it up as best you can. You'll never get the old adhesive off the sail so I just kind of roughed it up lightly with sandpaper and then wiped with acetone. If your sail is as old as the boat you probably don't need to be too concerned about damaging it since it likely has other problems and is not long for this world. Gluing ten numbers and two Hobie decals is going to take awhile. You may not want to bother unless it really bugs you. Or make it a winter project. It is real hard to glue these without making a mess.
