If you want to go out on the ocean here in the So Cal area let me know. I usually sail out of Channel Islands and Marina Del Rey harbors. I also sail up at Castaic Lake where I teach the CSU Northridge sailing class. I can help you with finding parts and possibly a boat.

As a 23 year old myself, I'm glad to see another young person getting into hobie sailing.

Email me and we'll see what we can do about getting you set up.

The bottle nose dolphins were great on the way back, POD of 2000 NO @#$!$ There I was :!: :!: :!: Sailed to the arch and beam reached all the way in. On a clear day you never loose sight of land.

I wish I had known that. I guess we'll just HAVE TO go back again  The Hotel Riu and the Club Med were a lot further south than I could walk from the Hilton. It might not have done any good anyway since there was a Gulf hurricane causing huge waves and wind. The weenies at the Hilton closed the beach for "safety" so I bet they weren't letting boats out either. (My kids and I were body surfing and had to get kicked off the beach to find that the beach was closed  We had to be content with drinks at the pool. 8) It's all good.

By the way, I will be in Chincoteague from the 9th to the 16th of July- is anybody on here from that area? Can we meet up? Should I tow the 17 down? Drinks are on me!

PS Here's a two marguerita idea-> let's have a "Forum Party" somewhere like Cancun where we can meet these crazy wonderful people that share almost daily.

I'll vote for that!! Except I'm got going to trailer my 16 from Saskatoon to Cancun! I'd wear the tires out for sure and could probable buy one for the money I'd spend on gas lol.

if you're near san diego, and want to go straight into the ocean(instead of going out the channel in mission bay) there's a public access beach launch in La Jolla. Have yet to take my cat out there yet, but i plan on going there over mission bay the next time i go out(who knows when the repairs'll be done, and if i can get someone to come along). The launch is right near Scripps Pier, and the surf is light in the area to launch(is in a cove of sorts). I'm not sure how consistent the wind is out of there, seen it blowing and dead. can't wait to get out along the coast line there though, ought to get some nice pictures.

Ocean sailing is great. But I suggest going out with someone with ocean knowledge. I sail in Santa Cruz California. The wind speed average is 15 to 20 knots here and it is now joke. this wind has broken many boats. We sail only about 1 to 2miles out. any farther out is just stupid. Swells get really big here. Sailors have been separated from there boats and had to spend the night in the cold 54 degree water for upto 11 hours. They were very lucky. I am not trying to scare you. Just please be very careful when sailing on open ocean. things change so fast. always tell somebody your sailing plan. When you plan to return. Carry a VHS radio and signal flares. Just in case all hell breakes loose. And know your limits. Ocean sailing is the best I have ever done. But Done with the greatest respect for Mother nature. If your ever in Santa Cruz I will gladly take you for a ride. Take care and be safe on the ocean.

I personally believe the ocean is the only place to sail a 16. I have done both lake sailing and ocean sailing. Only once or twice in 15 years have I been on a lkae that the sailing approached the "fun" of the ocean.
A couple of words of advice.
Stay away from the breakers (is that "the break" to you west coast folks?). As a surfer boogieboarder, you understand the energy in the surf.
You can trash a 16 in the surf zone in short order. Don't interpret that to mean that the 16 is incapable. About ten years ago, we were sailing up and down the beach with the wind coming perpendicular to the beach. We were sailing about 200 yards out. We hit a swell with the lee pontoon, and cartwheeled into the water. While we were thrashing around to get it righted (the main sheet got tangled up aroung the traveler and the rudder arm) we started blowing into shore. I was trying to swim the head ogf the mast around to help the wind right us. A 16 capsized in the surf is BAD NEWS. I got a batten cap jabbed into my upper, inner thigh(don't think about it too long it'll hurt) and long ride on a swell down the sail into the tramp.
We broke or lost 4 battens, broke one of the rudder locking cams and I looked like Robinson Crusoe with a shredded bathing suit (from the batten cap.
Lesson learned was: "Stay out of the surf except when beaching or launching and be careful in wind coming in to the beach."
Second bit of advice. Get an expirienced ocean sailor to go with you fist couple of times. Things happen so fast in the ocean. Learning by doing with someone more expirienced is invaluable.
Ditto to the other posts.
You will LOVE Sailing oin the ocean...it is what the boat was designed for.

Hey Y'all...
I rented a Wave in Cozumel a few months ago. All that it did was make me yearn for my 16... Saw one 16 for rent on the beach, but it was mostly duct tape, no trap system or tiller extension. Had to come home and get my fix...
