We are looking at buying new sails for our Hobie 16, 1984. When looking at new sails, we see a 3.9 oz sail and a 4.0 oz sail. What is the difference in sailing and life? I see none of these come with battens, and our battens are shot. Should we mix and match old battens (we have a couple of old main sails) or get a new batten kit?

Not opposed to used sails but tired of sewing and taping. Anybody have anything or know of any good source?

Quite honestly, the battens have an incredible effect on the shape of the sail. Given the cost of new sails, I would buy the batten set also.

If you've been fighting old sails for a while you will be delighted with the shape and performance of the new set.

Factory supplied new batten sets are generally well shaped and with a new set of battens the sail will probably shape very nicely right out of the box with an absolute minimum of hassle.

If the sails you are looking at have different Dacron cloth weights then unfortunately they are not Hobie Factory sails. Hobie factory sails are one-design class legal and therefore they don't specify the weight. The beauty of one design racing. Call your local Hobie Dealer to get the specifics.

Stock battens will definitely fit a stock Hobie factory sail any other manufacturer you may be modifying them.
