I suppose the technique was not correctly used here?

I understand the backwards part to see the waves coming, but you should take a few forward strokes as each wave reaches you... then reverse again. Riding the wave backwards would not be my choice way of coming in.

I would not do that , particularly with that nice sandy beach. It should enable the Mirage Drive fins to beach OK up against the hull

I'd just hammer her in on top of the wave, and slam one pedal fwd as you ride the wave in. If you turn sideways use your paddle. See Jim Sammons brace method on KFS

my friend Paul should have been paddling forward trying to position himself on the backside of the wave not the front

In a situation like that you really have to dig and paddle hard to go forward, clearly he was moving fast

but in the winter months when we do our Monthly Workshops at Kayak Fishing Stuff we can review the video and talk about what to do and not do

Good question Tomatocity, I was wondering the same. I always motor full speed ahead and try to surf the last wave in and jump off. I've never had a problem doing it like that, never rolled anyways... That technique works well for me.

I guess there is 2 schools of thought

1 - your way full speed ahead

the other way backwards - it allows you to watch the waves and better time your position in the waves, if you have to you just paddle foward quickly and you won't you can wait for the next set

He forgot to paddle forward and once he started moving it was to late
