Performance - Wave to Getaway

Anyone converted from a Wave to Getaway? What was the performance increase? How was it solo? I have a wave currently and thought the Getaway may increase the thrill level for me AND the family. Thanks

I have never sailed a Get, but looking at the numbers alone, it has nearly double the sail area, which should certainly make it faster. Esp if you carry passengers/crew.

If I go out alone on my Wave, it is pretty peppy. Get another adult, or two kids, and it slows to about 1/2. Put four adults on it, and it turns into a DOG.

Someday I would love to move up to a Get. More room to stretch out. More sail area for the added weight of taking friends/fam. Having the fwd tramp is a really cool place for the kids to hang out.

As for solo, it may be a little more to handle, since you have to manage the jib as well. But people do it.

2007 Hobie Wave

Sailing the getaway solo is pretty easy, as the jib simple to manage, and the boat is very forgiving.
One complaint solo it that the boat is so much heavier than me that it does not really matter much where I sit. I can trap out in no wind and the boat pretty much remains flat. Coming for windsurfing or from Hobie 16, you loose the sensation of being part of balancing the boat.
May be the Wave provides better sensation on that respect for solo sailing, even though it does not seem possible to install trapeze on the wave.

So if the question is to know if you can sail the getaway solo, the answer is absolutely yes.
If the question is to know if the getaway is fun solo, personally, I'd say no.

If you have family though, the boat is super fast and accommodating.

I solo approx. 60% of the time. Very easy to handle.

The only problem I have with the Getaway is that in heavier wind it is nice to have someone with you, not only for ballast but to assist in righting if you go over. When alone I try to sail conservatively since there are few people on that portion of the lake and if I capsized, I could be riding on the capsized boat the 30 miles to the dam. Love to sail alone though and had the GPS showing over 15 mph the other day, 11-12 downwind

Did you mean MPH or Knots ?
My record is 14.9 Knots... granted I sail conservatively as well. Above 13 knots, things become pretty wild.

A couple of years ago, we made the move from a Wave to a Getaway mostly because my daughter likes to sail with friends. While we liked the Wave, we have really liked sailing the Getaway either single handed, with 2, or with up to 4 people on the boat. I think the Getaway is a lot more fun and is much more comfortable.

What does "wild" mean? Less controllable? How is Hull flying? I have had a wave up for around 10-20 seconds but that's about it. I get a degree of hull plow even while waaaaay back behind the tiller bar ( with maximum rake). Is this the same with the getaway in your opinion?

For me, it just seems that up to 12/13 knots boat speed, sailing the getaway is just like a walk in the park. 14 knots, and I start to be on my toes.
I sail in Santa Cruz Monterey bay, so conditions are usually 15/20 knots wind, and waves can be pretty big. So when wind blows, usually the waves are there too, and the Getaway really has more than enough power for me. Because I am super light, I find that I have more control if I cleat the main on the lower hole to reduce the sail area.

Flying a hull is doable, but it does not really seem like flying until you really get high in the air, and then, I can't keep there for too long. (20 seconds may be ? it is probably due to my current beginner skills anyway, and I need more practice)

It seems that the boat wants to sail flat, and flying is not its natural state.
I wish however the getaway had the option for 2 trapezes. It seems ridiculous that you can only put one trapeze on such a big boat. Had I realized that before the purchase, that could have been a deal breaker.
