Thank you for your replies, unfortunately I did not realise that the 18 had a comptip mast as I had never seen one on an 18.
The mast is aluminium and the sail appears to be a Hobie sail, did not think it was an aftermarket one, will check more thoroughly on the coming weekend. Did notice the sailmakers badge, but didn't actually pay attention to it.
I sail on an inland dam where once out we do not have much warning to increasing wind levels until it arrives, I set out in 15 to 20 knots and was hammered with winds up to 42 knots. No atheists on the dam at that time.
Had only used the main, jib was not on due to furler issues. My weight is only 185 pounds and sailing solo, hence the reasoning behind reefing. Found that I could sail the H16 quicker with main reefed in high winds, so tried to apply the same logic to the 18, and to prevent excess wear etc. Had depowered the main before leaving shore.
