Just bought my first boat, a H16. What should I check?

I just brought home my first boat a 1984 Hobie 16. The hard parts are solid, but the lines and tramp are all dry rotted. The sail is in perfect condition also. So my question is there a article or such about everything I should check on a old boat. Currently I plan on buying all new lines, a tramp, and setting up a righting system. The standing rigging looks good, but once I get all the lines, I can determine if there is any missing hardware.

If you don't know how old the standing rigging is then replace it since a dismast can ruin your day.

Should I put the mast in the pool to check for leaks? How about the checking the hulls for leaks with air?

check hulls about 10 inches in front of front pylons for soft spot if soft or flexable find a different boat, there are plenty more out there.

if standing rigging is single nico press should upgrade to new wires with double, new wires are a whole lot cheaper and easier than replacing a mast.

check tramp for wear spots and replace if nessesary everything else can be done when needed

I bought a 1981 H 16 last year. With the help of this board we've been sailing and having a blast ever since! We replaced the running and standing rigging as well as the tramp. We also have been adding goodies here and there. Compared to other boats (Power and sail alike) the support for our boats is amazing!

Oh yea, many people might do it but I'd really think twice about putting air pressure in the hulls. I'd just look them over real good and check them after your maiden voyage. Sometimes we get a little water in them (Like a cup or two), sometimes nothing.

We put a baby bob on the mast. If you are in deep water maybe you might not choose to do it but many places we sail are less than 30 feet and I don't want to turtle and have a damaged mast OR have black Chesapeake mud raining down on me after a capsize. We have field tested the Baby Bob and it works GREAT!
