Spirit of 76 Sails

I saw a auction on Ebay a while ago of a hobie with Spirit of 76 sails. The main had red and white sections, and the jib was blue with some stars in a circle.

Does anybody have photos or know where to get more info on this sale design? I want to build them for my boat. I have done detailed searches on the internet trying to find these sails.

Thanks for the location of the image. Would you happen to know where a high resolution image is located?

Also does anyone have sail plans for a hobie sail so I can cut my own pattern? I have heard of people designing stuff on programs but have never seen the designs.

Last question first:

No - not for sale. The only way you're going to get that is to reverse-engineer them, i.e., you're going to have to disassemble a set and make your own patterns. Unless you're willing to invest a significant amount of time, energy and tooling into developing the capability to build them, you're better off buying them from Hobie Cat or one of the non-class legal builders like Whirlwind Sails.

Yes, I do (I'm the creator of the sail pattern chart) - but that pattern is not rocket science. The only "difficult" part is the stars - and even they're pretty simple. Thirteen five-pointed stars arranged in a circle. The original sail had them silkscreened on, but stickyback vinyl is probably the way to go these days.

You could even have those sails made by Hobie Cat these days (without the stars) - they have the red and blue cloth in stock, although they're not quite the same colors as they were 32 years ago.

I bought my H16 a few years back from a guy in your neck of the woods.....does the sail # 89013 sound familiar? Yellow hulls, tramp, and yellow sails with rainbow near the bottom. Guy I bought it from, his first name is Ben. Was just curious..noticed you're from the same area as my boat.

Sorry, but it doesn't - 89XXX sails would make it a late 80's boat. Lots of people have come and gone since then.

Now, the Detroit Hobie Fleet is made up mostly of Tigers and a couple of 16's. The Austin Lake fleet (Kalamazoo) is mostly 16's, but they don't travel anymore.

In 1990, there was a regatta held in Gary at the end of Lake St. (the place you were trying to get on the map in the other thread). It only lasted a year. Too much wierdness going on there.

My boat is a 86 H16 according to the serial numbers on my hulls...bought it from Ben Lashaway. There's about a dozen or so of us that sail off of Lake St. in Gary these days, and the numbers of Hobies seem to growing! Its actually gotten to be a good place to sail...I've been sailing there since 2000, and its gotten quite safe. There's a harbormaster running the launch ramp traffic, and he has a sense of humor too LOL. First Hobie Fox I ever saw at Wolfs Marine is owned by guy that lives down the beach, there's some Inters that sail here too.

First time I ever sailed my boat, I took it up to Austin Lake.....one of the guys in that fleet (Joe), helped me set it up, turned me loose in it for the first time....what a rush!
