I bought a Hobie 16 and my son was wondering - after he learns to sail - if he could take it out alone.

Is it sailable without a jib?

Any guides?

Thanks,
Ron

It's much, much easier to sail with the jib. Just slide the jib travelers out and let the main traveler out a little to depower when it picks up.

As far as single handing, that really depends on how old/big he is and how experienced a sailor he is. I wouldn't just send him out alone unless he were an experienced sailor. The H16 is not a boat that is easily righted after a capsize. I've never been able to get mine back up without a second person.
