What year did the Hobie 16 start using the comp tip mast?

I bought my '85 new and it was not equipped with the comptip mast. I received notice from Hobie later that I could have it retrofitted to my mast if I wanted to do so. That means that you can find boats earlier than '86 that do have the comptip.

Back in the '80's, I worked for a dealer assembling boats.

The masts were in one pile and the rest of the boats came in 2 boxes. They weren't matched up.

You just got a older mast with your newer boat.

But Billy's right (post below).

Comptips weren't introduced to the public until January 1986.

They started comp tips in 1986 so it was normal for the 85 not to have a comp tip.

cheers

I never did have my mast retrofitted to the comptip when Hobie offered it. My point is that you can't date a boat by whether or not it has a comptip. I guess it isn't class legal to race without it but since I don't race it didn't matter.

My mast has its own serial number embossed on an alum plate. Is there any decoding info for this? My boat is an 87 per the serial number, but older per the owner. I know everything is original and it has a comp tip.

If you aren't sailing on the edge, you're taking up too much room.

Nope. Just a serial number.
