The following came as an email from John Lunn to a bunch of us. He wanted to get some images posted about a doo-dad a friend of his came up with.

I'm confused! Why not just leave the drain plugs out? What do I gain by putting tin ducts in my portholes?

I did something similar last spring. I got extra port covers and mounted a 1 1/2" PVC U shape in them with screen (to keep the bugs out). Screw them in when the boat is on the trailer or beach, put he solid covers in when sailing. They worked great. I have pictures but haven't figured out how to post them. :(

Ok. And why do I need cross-ventilation? If the hulls are dry they will breathe in when cold and out when hot thru the drains, I'm still confused!
What benefit is there to this technique?

The amount of air that moves in/out of the drain plugs (when there is no other opening) is minimal.

It's almost always more humid inside the hull than out. (You may think it's dry inside, but it's not.)

By increasing the air flow, you decrease the humidity and eventually dry out the hull completely.

I rigged an old kitchen exhaust fan in a piece of stove pipe that sits on top of the port and forces air through the hull. Made my 17 ten pounds lighter over the course of a week.

The new one?!?! I've got my boat sitting in pieces in my basement, hulls open. Makes me think I should wrap up the hulls in a heating blanket, and add some fans. :P

No, the old one. Bringing the hulls inside in the winter is the best, plus you've got ports in the FX-One.

You know how dry the indoor air is in the winter . . .

i have the bungs out in my H18 and i have just replaced all the hatches as well,WITH CLEAR ONES, and i can see the condensation build up on the inside of the hatches, a direct cause of the hulls sweating, another reason
for leaving the hatches of for ventilation. :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

does anybody have any DETAILED photo's that they can send to me or display them for all who dont have them, of the H18 MAGNUM WINGS or the SX WINGS, its amazing what you can build from photos. CHEERS :?: :?: :?:
