I just picked up my 2009 Hobie 16 and was disappointed to find that the 6:1 downhaul did not come standard. I specifically asked the dealer if it did but he was unsure. Without the 6:1 downhaul, the top of the gooseneck traveler barely entered the mast slot even after cranking down the mainsheet as hard as I could. Also, the dealer did not have a kit "on the shelf" so I will have to have him order it for me. Does anyone know if the kit comes with the downhaul gauge and are there instructions on how to place it on the mast?

BTW make sure the nut at the bottom is put on with lock tight.

mmadge,
Thanks for the info on the downhaul.

I am interested in your jib halyard cam cleat. Could you discribe the parts needed and the method used to install that set up? It looks a lot cleaner than the way the dealer showed me how to rig without it.

MMadge,

Yes, the downhaul gauges are not relly needed .... but they are good for repeatability and training novice sailors.

When I was coaching in the Special Olympic Sailing Program we discovered that the gauges were very helpful .... we could just tell the "Athlete" to pull on the red line until the sail (bottom) was even w/ "4" on the gauge for example. In the 1995 World Games, in New Haven Conn on H18's, I would every morning go w/ a tape measure, a roll of duct tape and a permenate marker .... make "gauges" for the downhaul, outhaul and main traveler, then install them on the boats that the Maryland Delegation was assigned for the that day. The Special Olympic officals were surprised that the Maryland Athletes not only trimmed the jib ... but also adjusted the downhaul, outhaul, mast rotation and the main traveler. The other delegations coaches started to watch what we were doing and noticed the gauges .... other coaches started to ask if they could use my tape measure, roll of duct tape and marker ....

So since I'm always giving "Newbies" rides I have gauges on my H18 (and P19MX) .... this way I can get them "involved" in sailing the boat with me .... they are not RIDING on the boat .... but .... they are SAILING the boat .... a sutle difference ....

So when I come to Canada (ay), I just need to bring a dipnet???

I don't care HOW the fish gets into the skillet .... just that it is IN the skillet .... (I've been out smarted too many times by something w/ scales .... I've found it easier to have someone else catch the fish, I just cook them ...)

Thanks Mike,

I am now beginning to understand how "YOU" catch fish ..... "here son go catch "US" some fish for dinner" ..... I like that .... "Oh, before you go, could you get me beer from the cooler as you pass by .... " I like it even more.

Ya, Chris suckered me on that .... I just was intreged by the name and was surprised that no one else questioned it before I noticed it ....

"Deadstinkyfish" .... that IS funny .... we WILL have to get even (actually slightly ahead) someday.

From physics/thermodynamics I know about "Phase Change Points" .... a substance shall remain at the phase change temperture until all the substance changes from a liquid to a solid ... liquid to a gas ....

So if there was ice on the edges of the lake .... and ice forms at 32F/0C ... that water is just alittle chilly I would think ......
