18SX spinnaker

When I bought my 18SX three years ago I had no idea what I got since I didn't know there were two kinds of 18s. The boat came with everything for an SX rig, including a spinnaker which I have not learned to rig or sail. I recently dug up the spinnaker gear and found it to be in good condition, so my question is - If I were to go with a spinnaker, is the stock spinnaker gear (sail, pole, bag, etc.) from a 1991 18SX worth re-installing, or should I get something aftermarket?

If you've allready got it why not try it out. A newer flat cut spin will be faster but why not give the old SX sail a whirl. I assume you will be bag launching it from the deck? There is a set-up guide on this site. Wings must be on the boat to install the spin. Good luck!

We've had a blast with the turtle bag. Thing we've learned: Stuff the spin in the bag so that the grommets are first to come out - the spin pops better that way.

I had a spin on my 18 for years and it was great. It was before the F18 and was pretty uncommon to see a beach cat flying a spin. The turtle was fine. The added expense of modifying the spi with patches and fitting a snuffer and the continuous halyard will cost around $500. Just fly it and see if you like it. You will! Can I go with you?

Who has instructions on the Hobie 18SX turtle bag batten?? I am missing it and while it may seem to be obvious just to measure the distance between the batten pockets...to me...the batten pockets do not seem to be properly placed...the pockets don't seem to parallel the zipper...but go the other way between zippers.

I would appreciate any more information available on the Hobie turtle bag. Thanks.

I talked with my two favorite Hobie dealers, and neither has any information on what is or was used on the Hobie turtle bag.

Matt, is there a history on the Turtle Bag somewhere?

Battens are supposed to keep the bag elevated so the spin goes in and out easier. I have only seen one in use and didn't like it. Some of the deck mounted dry bags use a similar technique. Its got to be under compression to stand up so it will be longer than the pocket measurement. Wish I could be of more help.
