Now, however, after reviewing the comments about the characteristics of this craft, I don't think this is the boat for me. The fact that so many talk of flipping and cartwheeling has pretty well convinced me that I need something significantly tamer. I don't care to go fast or hiking out with one hull flying.
I’ve sailed about half a dozen times before the 2008 season on small monohulls. I bought my first Hobie cat (a 16) in 2008 and I love it. However after a few times out on the lake I’ve discovered that I like cruising a lot better than racing. The Hobie is a great boat for that as well. Give me a mooring in a beautiful cove with my cooler and I’ll let you have your trapeze harness and hiking out to win a race. When I was out the lake in heavy air (15mph gusting to 25mph) all I had to do was dump the wind to sail at a rate with which I was comfortable. On a day where I could have easily flown a cat, I had the sail let way out, dumping air, which was greatly appreciated by my lubber crew. I’ve decided that the anxiety of going turtle in a gust is far outweighed by the satisfaction I get passing anything with 1 hull in light (5mph) air.
So I understand if trouble titling your boat causes you to sell it, but don’t let the amazing performance of the Hobie Cat cause you to sell your boat.
