Here's a question that most people would think I'm crazy for asking, but as stated earlier I don't know much and am new to the Hobie world.

Do I need a sail from Hobie or can I use an off brand? If so, which ones?
My gut tells me that Hobie uses specific patterns and sizes that are specific to the Hobie products. But I've never found a concrete answer.

Thanks for the help guys!

are you racing or pleasure sailing? If your racing you must have a sail manufactured by Hobie cat, if your day sailing any sail will do.

I should clarify, I'm going to be pleasure sailing.

My boat is old and not in "tip top" shape. But it was given to me and I've had the folks at Select Sail & Sports look it over, and they've informed me that it's still got plenty of life left. Just isn't race ready.

Any clue on good manufacturers that I can use? I'm still having a little trouble finding used sails. I'll need both a jib and main with battens on the jib.

Man, I'm getting so pumped for summer.

Kent,

You never mentioned WHICH Hobie you have ... a H16, H17, H18 etc

For example if you are looking for H18 sails go to HCspace.org ... into the Hobie 18 (HC18.org) page ... Stephen Cooley has a new H18 "Factory" mainsail for sale at a reduced price ... several others have some used H18 sails for sale currently also

but we need to know which class of boat you have and then if it is a sloop-rig do you need the complete set or just a mainsail or just a jib.

I'm sure someone has a sail you can use ....

Sorry. I have a hobie 16. Probably an early 1970's model. There is no serial number on the boat so i cannot verify which year. Thanks.

and do you need a jib ... or a mainsail ... or a complete set???

So I would recommend going to the H16 forum here and the NEW HC16.org "social" website and start a thread .... Needed Used H16 sails, perferably "Factory" ... will be used for pleasure sailing.

There will be a "racer" who has a set of H16 sails that are not up to Hobie Points Regatta standards but are still functional enough for pleasure sailing .... just laying around ... and they need $$$ in these "difficult" times ... so you will be their savior!!!!

Have patience, there's some time till spring yet ... according to the Weather Channel it's still cold in Neb... BRrrrrrrrr

While the H-16 sails made by hobie cat are my first choice. You do have a few options.
Chip at whirlwind sails makes a very nice product.
Also Jeremy at Surf City Catamarans has quality sails in his own branded sail. He is a Hobie dealer and is always available for support. I have bought from both him and chip in the past. I currently use Surf City sails for non racing and f-18 racing. Hobie sails for hobie racing.
The only reason I'm using surf city over whirlwind is that Jeremy supports hobie so much, chase boats, committee boats, racing at events, bieng official sponsor ect.

Give him a call and get the details if you think this will help

Probably not or not well. A Hobie sail is fully battened, that one isn't. Don't buy it.

If you do a Murrays sail, my advice is to get the 5 oz.

3.9/4.0 oz cloth really isn't durable enough for Hobie Cat's.

The sails Murrays sells are made in the same loft that hobie uses, also they can give you leads on and or sell used sails. remember points racing requires class legal sails and murray's can give you all that info.
