I'm sorry but I do NOT think the average recreational sailor is going to be sailing in conditions that require him to pull the jib and reef the main...

With that being said the 18 has more versatility as far how many people you can sail with on it. I've sailed with 4 people easily and single handed in lots of wind by rolling the jib and depowering the main. One of the greatest things about the 18 is that it doesn't have a tendency to pichpole, which is a lot of weight off my shoulders when single handing.

Little wing where in the black hills do you live? Do i know you?

The 18 is nice and stable but when it does go over you will need either a.) plan of action or b.) help. The 16 is a lot more forgiving and much simpler boat. You can also buy two hobie 16's (more like four where I live) for the cost of a hobie 18.

I was forever fixated on the 18 until I spent a lot of time on one and now love the 16. If I wanted a small boat to entertain people on it wouldn't be a beach cat... I always liked the 18 for taking more people with but most of my friends come out once a year with me.

I also have owned both, the 18 is a designated high wind boat especially with wings. I enjoy the 16 more over all it is easier to drag around the beach buy your self and I feel more excitement on a 16.
