With all the kayak fever I've developed recently, I really wanted to find a good kayak magazine at either a local magazine store or bookstore. I thought for sure I'd be taking one to work with me tonight but no such luck. I've called everywhere, kayak shops, surf shops book and magazine stores and none of them even carry kayak magazines. What a disappointment.

Hey PA155 how's it goin?

Most book stores are run & managed by High School kids who half the time don't know the name of a book or could point you to one if they tried.
God forbid if the store doesn't have a computer listing. At least that has been my experience in book stores in my area. You have to look for yourself and also be sooooo specific in what you are asking for such as Kayak Angler magazine. Seems more and more periodicals and newspapers are going online. Going to be hard to find a paper magazine one day.

Here are just a few you could subscribe to:

http://www.seakayakermag.com/
http://www.canoekayak.com/
http://www.kayakfishingmagazine.net/ (online magazine)
http://www.paddlermagazine.com/
http://www.kayakangleronline.com/ (a good one)

A few good books:

KAYAK FISHING: THE ULTIMATE GUIDE 2ND EDITION
RELEASE DATE MARCH 1, 2009
By Captain Scott Null and Joel McBride

"Kayak Fishing: The Revolution" (Book) by Ken Daubert

Happy Reading

I might draw your attention to page 33 of the new Canoe and Kayak magazine's "Beginner's Guide". :D It has a picture of a Hobie partially hidden by the world's greatest kayak angler.

Kayak angler magazine is the one I would really like to find but at this point I'd be happy just to get any one of them. I did notice that alot of them are only online but sometimes I just like having the paper copy. Well, I'm inside tonight behind the desk so "online" it will be. Thanks for the feedback.

Hey Revo, Thanks for the info. I checked all of them out and went through every page on the trial issue of Kayak Angling. That one in particular was really good. I think I'm gonna subscribe to Kayak Angling. I fish mostly freshwater for largemouth bass and it was nice to see that they covered fresh and saltwater. They even had a picture of a carp which I wondered if anyone fished for carp on a kayak, I know carp are not the most popular fish but I fish for them too, so I'm sold on that magazine. Workin the night shift behind the desk gets alittle dull after while and I'd like the printed version so I can read it here and at home. By the way, I can't wait to get some of your weather up here in the northeast. Be safe and have a great day.

I got it! I found a kayak shop about 40 minutes away that had the Kayak Angler magazine. What a nice guy. When I walked in the shop I told the gentleman behind the counter, I'm the moron that just drove 40 minutes for a magazine. He started laughing his butt off. As we talked I had asked him what I owe for the magazine and he said, anyone that drives that far for a magazine, I cannot charge them. What a nice guy. It was a shame that he don't carry Hobie though. I asked why and he said that there was a hobie dealer just a few miles from him and it wasn't worth the competition. That being said he was really a nice guy that didn't rush me out even though he knew I'm interested in the ProAngler and he didn't try to talk me out of it either.

Hi ProAngler

funny you mention Carp. I also predominately fish freshwater for Largemouth Bass & Peacock Bass in my kayak but recently have added saltwater to my kayak fishing spots. I mostly fish salt water in my 20' Proline wayyy offshore.

Carp, I was fishing for bass on my lake & lost my favorite lure so put on an ugly flourescent yellow/green red bellied cheap crankbait (only other one I had with me at the time since I was fishing live bait & silver minnow repala) I casted off to the edge of the weeds and my line suddenly went off to the right and my reel started dumping .. I thought this was no bass .. even the 9.5 pounder I caught in the lake did not run like this. I tightened the drag and my yak began following the line. I tried to bring it in but my reel kept getting stripped and he was pulling me all over the place in a 13' revolution. After 20 minutes of fighting I got the fish within 6 feet of the surface and I thought I had a tarpon or something. The reel dumped again and I knew at that point I was not landing this one so I pedaled (thank God for Mirage Drive) a half mile home dragging my catch behind me stopping to catch up the reel after two more dumps. Screaming for my wife or a neighbor to get a camera. I got the fish up alongside the kayak and it was a common carp almost 36" long .. the head on him was over 8" wide and as I lifted the line to bring him up for the picture he whipped his head and snapped my 12# test and off he went. So ended a 40 minute fight and no proof of the puddin.

I do now occasionally fish just for Carp but they are easily spooked and tough to catch but what a thrill ride they can give you in a kayak. Plenty of websites on fishing for carp and baits. I have heard French Fries float and are killer Carp bait .. but have not tried 'em yet.

The one that got away and thus my signature .. being dragged around by a large fish IS exhilarating even if you don't land him. Fortunately he was a common Carp because a Grass Carp is a $500.00 fine in my area if you remove it from the water.

Great story. I have a 14 ft. jon boat I usually use for Largemouth bass two minutes from my home and there is another lake about a half hour from where I live where I go carp fishing but on shore. One day my son and I took the boat to the "carp lake" as I call it and managed to get the boat in the water since there really isn't a true launch at this lake. Anyway, for the first time we were able to see and explore parts of the lake we normally didn't even know existed. On that day we decided to anchor and cast four rods out and wait. About twenty minutes later my son got a hit on a rod I built for him and the line started coming off the reel like crazy. Unfortunately, when he tried to tighten the drag, the reel failed. It was at its tightest setting and the line kept coming off until suddenly, snap! the line broke and he was equipped with 20lb. test. Trilene XL. Carp are really exciting to catch. When we went to florida about five years ago, we stayed at my retired bosses home right on a brackish canal near Port Charlotte and within a half hour my son caught a grass carp about 25 to 30 lbs. it was huge. When I get my ProAngler, I'm definitely going to the carp lake.

Heyy Pro,

Don't ya just love those Carp.... They are becoming one of fresh waters most challenging and best fighting sport fish. Similar to a wahoo in Salt water they just run and run and run and seems takes forever to wear them out.

Next time I hook into a big one I am going to beach my yak and bring it ashore. My neighbor brought one in that was about 2 feet long and weighed around 20 pounds so the 36" one I can just imagine how fat & heavy he was. He had no trouble dragging a 13' kayak with a 200# man in it. My medium weight rod has a permanent bow in it from being doubled over for the 40 minute fight.

Word of advice Grass Carp in Florida is a NO NO ... do not remove from the water cut line & let em go. $500.00 Fine makes for an expensive fishing trip.

Keep us posted on your catches when you get the ProAngler.

Thanks for the advice. I better hide the pictures I have from that trip. I never knew that. I'll keep you posted on the Pro Angler. All the dealers in my area are saying pretty much the same thing. They expect them in around mid April to the end of April.

There are big differences between the Common Carp & Grass Carp
Common Carp do not have a length/bag limit
Grass Carp are illegal to posses without a special permit.

Common Carp:

Grass Carp:

Easiest discernable difference Common Carp are Gold w/ long Dorsal Fin and have barbles (whiskers), Grass Carp are Silver w/ small Dorsal Fin no whiskers.

Yup, thats what those bad boys look like. I'm glad that they are starting to get some respect because for years fisherman would refer to carp as trash fish because they stir up the water and eat everything on the bottom. The fact is I am an avid largemouth bass fisherman too but bass could not compare to a fight that carp give. I've always enjoyed carp fishing and have been doing it since I was a kid with my dad. Carp was the only fish he went after. I remember when he caught a 23lb. 33 inch long common carp. That was awesome. The fight was awesome.

Thanks guys for the info on the carp. Back when my dad was stationed at MIT in the U.S. Navy's radar development program, we used to fish for carp (or "cop" as the Bostonians called them) in the Charles River. Haven't fished for them since, because of all the awesome salt water fishing here and in California where I grew up. May have to check to see what we have around here with regard to "cop."

You're definitely missing out on some fun if you don't. I'm glad to see that the "carp" subject is of interest to others beside myself. I can't wait to get my ProAngler and try some carp fishin. That would be awesome.
