DSC and GPS's

I was looking at the new bread of DSC radios and saw that they have clever GPS encoded distress capabilities that cover virtually all the US coastal waters.

Problem is DSC needs a separate GPS receiver. I have heard that outward bound equips there boats with a screen less GPS receiver to enable the boats DSC to function safely.

I looked thru Google but couldn't find anything specific.

Thankyou, i knew one of those existed but i couldn't find it again. I think that would be worth every penny if you do any kind of coastal or lakes cruising

Even for a Hobie 21, that is total overkill.

How many marine batteries are you planning to carry?

Are you planning to cross an ocean?

Batteries? one... I have a new radio now too ! I do deal with alot of bridges though.. Trying to coordinate with the bridge guy while running the boat means i had to strap on my hand held radio. I was finding it rough scrambling for the radio. And now that i have a 12V power system on board i was looking at radios that i know where they are. May just get a waterproof handheld still though.

Gauging the markets and my needs. A 75 mile three day trip could run me into trouble if i drop a mast etc.
