i think they teach alot more in school now. that doesnt make sense. Your teachers beat you with rulers and you watched slides from a projector. We have computers, dvd, internet.... direct deposit

I would pay to be back in school again. Wait, come to think of it, I paid to be there the first time around.

But as has been said before, enjoy school it is much more fune then work.

As to teaching these days, my son is studying engineering at the same university I did and from what I see they teach as much if not more now then 25 years ago. The big difference is the food is much much better now.

I doubt that. I had computers, dvd's, the internet, direct deposit. I'm only 28, and didn't make use of school when I was there. I screwed around, got drunk with my buddies, and chased alot of tail. I work in construction. Like Andy said, the world needs carpet layers, or in my case cabinetmakers, but it sure would be nice to have a clean and safe job that isn't destroying my body and that actually pays well.

Yesterday, I stopped at the grocery and bought an item that was $2.19. I handed the cashier (a college-age girl) a $5 bill, then said "Oh, I may have the change". When I checked my pocket, I had a quarter, so I handed it to her, but she had already keyed in the bill. She actually stopped and stared at it for several seconds (like she'd never seen one before), then asked the next cashier "What's 25 minus 19?". I said "It's six cents." The other cashier ignored her, so she asked again. I said "It's six cents." A third time, she asked the other cashier who finally said "It's six cents!" She then said to me "So you get three dollars and six cents back, right?" The lady in line behind me was appalled, and said "You should know that. You use math every day." The cashier said "Oh, I like math; I'm just not very good at it." The lady said "I'm a math professor, YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT."

So this girl was able to use a computer (the cash register) enough to get a job with a major grocery store chain, but could not do the simplest math. And was so clueless, she didn't believe me when I told her the answer. THAT IS SCARY!!!

Believe it or not, there's a lot of that going around.

this thread has taken a fun "turn"

I am sure we have all had the cashier experience as described above. The interesting thing I find about it (besides the fact that it shows a lot of people no longer do math in their head) is that you don't actually have to do math to make change but the people that stumble on the change are doing so because they don't do math. To make change you just count up from the sale price until you reach the amount of money that was handed to you. Those of us that are old enough to have lived in the pre-computer cash days remember the change arriving smallest denomination first (today they had it to you as the amount of change with the largest first).

What I find interesting is how we lost the "art" of making change. That is the computer "finds it easier" (or at least the program algorithm is easier to write) to do by subracting and that is what we see done now. So when a human has to do it, they assume they have to do it the same way - by subtracting, when in fact it is easier for a human to do by counting up.

This isn't math related (requires very little education) but is one of my "pet peeves." I hate it when the attendant at a fast food restaurant reaches inside a cup (or even holds it around the mouth) to hands it to me. Ew!!! Needless to say, after an explaination, I ask him/her for another and I was surprised to see how many people don't.

Yeah, give it another 30 years, and you'll be old and crotchety too!

Believe me, we're all just jealous!

Your drawings are good! They show talent and imagination, and great subject matter.

your drawing is great. In many ways. See how much thought and activity they inspired. Some artist wait an entire life time to evoke such feelings with their art.

It is sunny and windy out now and I am stuck inside. Good thing the water is still barely above freezing or I would be wishing I was sailing.

No offence indended by this or any previous posts on this thread. I have enjoyed the humour in it.

Oh, come on sgtpepperoni00! Your abilities go far beyond your drawings. You have motivated us all to cry out, "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore." You have caused us to open our eyes (and even grow a pair) to all the atrocities (primarly in the area of education) that are going on in this world. Look, I sell the technology but I'm not an advocate of it's use. You can't create true art with a computer. That's why"I love your pictures." Really!!!!

Now hold on just a second. Just because something wasn't drawn or painted by hand doesn't mean it isn't art. There are some amazing and incredibly beautiful CG (computer generated) and graphic images on the web. Try a google search. Art is defined as 'the quality, production, expression, or realm according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.'

Now I'll agree with you that music is an art, and a computer will not ever replace human musicianship. Nor will a computer ever be able to duplicate the expressiveness of dance.

That being said, it isn't fair to exclude computer created images and graphics as art. Someone had to put the time and creativity in to create them. There are some amazing graphic artists out there who create content that without a doubt can be called beautiful - fitting the definition of art.

BWells, Notice I said "TRUE ART." If anyone should be given credit for the beauty of CG, it should be the writers of the software. I didn't say that CG graphics weren't beautiful. But no matter how beautiful they may be, I still don't see them as true art. Even in the area of photography, most photographers will tell you that film renders more creativity than digital, although digital is more convenient. But that has no reflection on digitals creative capability.

I am a computer consultant (don't hold that against me) and an advocate of the advancement of most forms of technology. Quite a while ago, man made a grave effort to harness the atom to acquire a more efficient form of energy. Then one day, someone came along and figured out "hey, we can kill people by the masses with this." "This would make a great weapon."

A client of mine wanted me to sell him a computer for his 8 year old son. I informed him that I would sell him the computer but I wouldn't recommend it. I explained to him that it would be better long term for his son if he'd learn how to exercise his mind naturally instead of having the computer do it for him. He took my advise and I promise you....his son would not be one of those that couldn't count out your change for you.

I think we introduce technology to our young too soon. Television, computer games and computers are creating a generration of brain-dead youth. I became a computer consultant at the age of 42 (I'm now 62) after being an "Iron Worker" for 20 years. What allowed this transition to occur were things I had learned before I was 20 without a computer. :)

You'd be surprised how much "trig" we use when sailing. Hey, when are you going sailing again???? :D
