Pimp my Wave

Say, has anyone gone nuts and modified a Wave beyond standard? Added a downhaul system, added a boom perhaps... What about once you have added a boom, how about a leedle more sail area? Anyone? Love to see pics as well.

I have seen the traveler system that others have ingeniously produced but what else?

Loving the Hobie standard but as there is no racing for miles, I am content to sail for thrills and thought it might be fun to look at mods, I don't want to get a bigger ( read heavier) boat as I have to drag the cat up a slight embankment solo.

If you want a mod check out the hooter system that Rick White has put together.
It looks quite remarkable for performance on this little Wave. If you simply google "wave hooter" you will get the info. Check it out.

Yeah, I'd second that. That's exactly what I was going to say too.

Here's a poor man's version of Rick's hooter system. It's a six-foot beach umbrella, and it actually works very well in light breeze! I kept pace with Lightnings and Interlakes with their spinnakers up.

C'mon guys, surely there is more Hobie wave mods than this? So far I have a hooter and an umbrella... What about larger sail area, better downhauls and other ridiculous stuff? let work outside the box here people...

Here re my modifications/emhancements:

- I designed some seats that tie into the trampoline track, but ever since I started flying a hull, I never use them anymore.

- I bought some Icy Tunes (cooler + mp3 player amplifier), but ever since I started flying a hull, I never use it anymore (too much splash)

- I bought a wetsuit. THAT I use constantly. After I bought that, I didn't worry about capsizing...so I fly a hull all the time, now.

- I made a rack with rollers to roll my te hulls of my WAVE up onto my car (and off) single handed without worrying about scratching or dinging my car.

- I built some beach wheels and a tow bar to get it from my car to the water

- I bought some YOGA mats to lay on the tramp on lazy days to keep from water splashing up through the tramp (California ocean water is COLD). These, I use quite a bit.

At the end of the day, though, I have to admit, in a good wind, the WAVE is about as good as it gets, straight out of the box.

I will chime in too.
My favorite mods/accessories:
-Backrests (yes you can fly a hull with 'em, great for family or lazy sailing on my little 130 acre lake)
-Traveller kit
-Tiller extension
-Elimination of velcro straps (on classic model, to enable install of traveller)
-Hatchports (handy for storage of small stuff w/ port bag things, plus to see what is 'going on' inside the hulls)
-Ratchet main block

2007 Hobie Wave

I added (dual) tiller extensions, posted previously with photos; and a line on the bridle to help with re-boarding after a capsize. And sail numbers, visible in my spinbrella photo.

I built a custom trailer from a utility little trailer, by adding cross planks and extending the tongue.

I bought a "My-Pod" beach chair for my wife, as a back support.

I've played around with ideas to exploit the screw holes on the sides, but never came up with anything it needed there!

Like Corey said, it's a pretty darned good boat out of the box!

Oh, the fleet at Put-in-Bay customizes their bobs with racing stripes, etc...

Yes, you are correct, it is a Harken triple carbo ratchet. I purchased it on ebay for $15 NIB.

It is basically a Harken 2613 which I modified. I removed the cleat system, and carefully drilled out the rivets and moved the ratchet sheave to an outboard position from the center. This allows this block to function as a double, leaving the ratchet functional. It also puts the control switch for the ratchet itself accessible. Odly enough, the stock position makes the ratchet active all the time with no way to turn it off. Reassembly turned out to be a real challenge. All those derlin balls seemed to make it impossible to get back together. I actually used maple syrup to keep the balls in their races (grease is not recommended on these). Makes a sweet block assembly now . Anyway, I used long ss #6 screws in place of the rivets and put put it together eventually. However, I would not recommend this mod to a 2316, unless you can pick it up a real cheap, and have LOTS of patience. Do yourself a favor, and just buy the HSB411 special ratchet block from catsailor dot com. I think they sell it for ~$95

I once had an Alort Force 5 and then a Zuma once, both had ratchets, and I loved them (the ratchets that is). So I did a search for such a system for the Wave. I found this:http://www.harken.com/blocks/hobiewave.php

Anyway, it works great as it is. The middle sheave remains unused, as does the becket. But neither affects the operation.

I now use the old upper fiddle as part of my solo mast raising system.
