Hobie 16 Sail numbers

I just bought a used set of sails too replace my torn up ones. They look great aside from the sail numbers. there were only 2 numbers still attached, and very poorly. Does anyone know how to remove the extra adhesive that was left behind, and where can I get new numbers that are not digital numbers?

When i got my replacement sails, They scraped off the half-missing hobie logo on the top and replaced it with a new one and they were gonna add numbers but i couldnt afford 8 numbers at 10 dollars a piece. They didnt charge me much for the hobie logo. 20 dollars maybe. However, i had become friends with them after i continually had to bring in my original 1971 sails (#1768) over and over again.

It pays to keep paying i guess...

If you don't race then you don't need the numbers. Sail numbers are for identification in a race and are not tied to the HIN, but if you're just sailing recreationally then you don't need to replace the numbers. And if you do want to replace the numbers then put any number you want, but check that the old numbers won't leave a ghost image where they used to be. Turn an 8 sideways to form infinity ∞. I got a new sail with the numbers of my birthday so it's easy to remember.

Buy Hobie font sail numbers from your Hobie dealer and he'll also tell you how to remove the old ones. Numbers from Hobie come in only black or white, so if you want a Hobie font in a different color you'll need to go through a sail maker.

If ever you want numbers or any kind of graphics for your boan, just let me know and I'll give you the number of my banner man. He did all the graphics on my boat and he's really reasonable.

Try using "Goo Gone" to remove the adhesive. You can find it in the paint section of Home Depot / Lowes hardware stores. If you want to make your own sail #s you might find some insignia sail fabric at Seattle Fabrics http://www.seattlefabrics.com/marine.ht ... ia%20cloth . This fabric comes in many different colors and easy to cut with a good pair of scissors.

Go to any sign shop. They will use a computer and CNC cutter to make you any number you want, any size, any font and will cut it from a single sheet of vinyl. They will make it so you can apply all the numbers at the same time, perfectly spaced and aligned. I don't think the vinyl Hobie uses is any different or more resistant to weather than the stuff from sign shops. When I checked last year my local sign shop quoted my $35.

If you remove numbers from an old sail, even if you remove all the adhesive residue, the area under where the numbers were will be a different color- faded less than other parts of the sail.
