Anyone have any tricks for removing std sideplates and upgrading to the bigger late model plates?I found a small hairline crack a 1/4" aft of my starboard plate that starts at the lip and goes down about 1 1/2". I plan on glassing the inner hull ,but it sure is tight in there.Anyone else run into this issue.I have to get it taken care of before Havamega in nov.

I was not aware that there were two different sizes.

As far as repair hints, you might want to check with Jeremy @ Surf City Catamarans.

He is an incredible resource on every level.

hey Stephen,I am pretty sure there are two size plates,I am having Jeremy send me a set.I havent got into the hull yet.I am hoping that I dont have a problem getting the old fasteners loose.I plan on scuffing up the hull with 80 grit and laying some bi-directional glass inside and roll it out.I think i am going to have a problem if I cant get the repair area fairly flat inside because I still have to deal with the washers and nuts in that tight area.I can barely get a wrench on the existing nuts to tighten or loosen them.

Shawn, before you start laying up glass on the inside seam area you might want to consider making some filler material to smooth out the 90 degree seam first. Try to get a curved radius, using the diameter of a quarter as a guide. You can make the filler using resin and colloidal silica. Try to avoid applying fiberglass & resin to a hard 90 degree angle. Use something curved like the backside of a spoon, or a flexible squeegee to get a nice radius curve in the material. Also, when you talk about the plates is what you have on there now shaped like "u" channel? The newer - retro- plates are the "stirrup" shaped.

Yea,Rick,They are the u-shaped plates with 4 stainless screws in an arch. The plate is almost tucked away in the recessed area of the hull. The bigger 4 bolt ones i have seen look like they not only come down the gunwale farther but are wider also.I left my boat up at whiskeytown lake for the week ,going back up next fri to sail again,I will get a few pictures.I really cant see how a hairline crack started there running verticle,hopefully that top joint between the deck and hull isnt letting go partially.I just dont want to see a hole where my anchorplate used to be and my mast laying in the water,ha ha ha .

Just so there is no confusion,Jeremy shipped me the replacement plates and there is a huge difference in size.This should cure my problem for sure.There is definantly two different size plates on the h18.

Yeah .Rich I will be at whiskeytown friday and saturday,maybe sunday but im not going to try to glass this up till i get back home.Should be good wind 11-19 they say .

Got the job all done ,Thanks Again Jeremy at SURFCITY CATAMARANS,SANTA CRUZ CA.
A word of warning to anyone out there with a 81-82-83 h18 that has the small sidestay anchorpin plates,REPLACE THEM with the larger stirup style plates for front x-bar reinforcement.They use the same part.My boat has been babied and garaged most of its life before I got ahold of it and it still showed stress cracks on both sides of the boat.I think because the screw holes are so close together.Anyway I got her all kevlared up with 9 oz fab and west sys. epoxy. Thanks for all your input everyone, much appreciated!!!!!!!
