I have been having a trouble with the rudder castings, and have been un-locking them as I approach the wild beaces in South Dakota. Unfortunately, on Sunday's approach at about 35 mph winds, i was unable to unlock the port rudder, and we all know what happened.

I need a lower casting, old style (pre-87). Any one know of a source?

Thanks

Pete

Sorry, I can't give you a source for the old lower castings. However, a bit of advice for getting the old system to work-

Run the cam compression spring as light as possible, so the upper casting just 'clicks' in. Also, put a small dab of bearing grease on the surface of the cam where it engages the roller. Then use bungee cord wrapped around the rudder/rudder pin to hold the rudder down.

This way, the bungee does the majority of holding the rudder down and all the cam does is keep the upper casting in postion.

This is the system that I have evolved to and been using for many years and my rudders will kick up if I hit bottom (although I always try to manually kick them anyway).

Good luck with your search for a casting.

Hello Pete, I think I have one of those old style castings at home and will let you know later today although I am in Dallas which to the best of my knowledge is no where near the Dakotas !

Pete,

Where are you in South Dakota?????

I am possibly/probably coming up to Angustora for the Black Hills Classic event.

I have what you need and can bring it with me.

E mail fleet198@hotmail, I think Tom Machette's father inlaw might have those parts.

I'm sorry, no one can locate them at the coast for me. I am going down this Thursday and if I can locate will contact you and ship. I was uncertain when you needed to get it. You can contact me at ncmbm at hotmail dot com. I have parts in 2 states and three houses so sometimes its hard for me to locate stuff. Plus I have 16 and 18 parts so again hard for the untrained eye to figure out what is what. I plan to finally get all my stuff in one place and catalog it all, then sell everything I don't need.
