Where will the Torqueedo Trolling Motor Mount?

I've heard that Torqueedo will be supplying the new trolling motors for Hobie. Does anyone have any info on how or where this motor will mount? Also where will the batter supply be seated? I've heard that it would mount right inside the Mirage Drive well....any truth to this? Thanks...any info would be great.

The 402 model is made especially for yaks and the one they demo is on a revo, easy set up, only 15 lbs that includes the battery!!!! Check it out, there are 4 different models for different boats. No they don't fit in the Mirage drive at all, everything is on the stern completely out of the way. Good luck, lemme know what you think, Jim

The units appear to be identical except for a mounting change, so one could surmise you could mount on the rudder (or in place of the rudder) - or drop in the drive well

Hobie is innovative and always dreaming up new toys. The electric motor could open up a whole new world of kayaking to the physically challenged - or those of us who want to take it easy.

I hope they are very successful.

The drive well one has great potential.

Even though I use the Hobie primarily for exercise I would certainly have a lot more confidence in going long distances or going to tidal areas knowing I could shoot home if I get pooped or am struggling against tides.

That is quite a nice sustained top speed.

Lithium Manganese battery, ram mounted GPS guided control box with charge, distance and speed display. Looks Awesome!

I'm afraid to ask the price

I'd never thought I'd be interested in such a contraption but I'm intrigued.

I would guess around $1900.

Yea. I wouldnt guess too many people are going to jump on it at that price. Not with this economy.

From my understanding it comes with both mounting options (drive and rudder) except will only work with the drive mounting in the PA and inflatables.

A quick Internet search shows street pricing of the Torqeedo Ultralight at US$1700. My interest just dropped significantly. And a new battery is $600 when the time comes. It is a very clever and innovative product with no equal for speed/distance versus weight. But the very high efficiency motor, compact high-density unobtainium battery, and unnecessary GPS computer make it very expensive versus a heavier sealed gel cell and small trolling motor with fabricated mounts. I think I'll go back to exploring that solution and hopefully get something useful for around $400. I also found this system for $300 without battery but know little about it yet.

Peter - I hear ya.

Pick up a small electric trolling motor; attach it to a cassette plug and drop it in the mirage drive space. Add a gel cell and a controller and your set. There is no reason why it wouldn't work.

I have thought along those very same lines, and even looked to pick up a used trolling motor at a garage sale to experiment with.

It may be like comparing a golf cart to the Telsa electric sports car -

Big, cheap lithium batteries are what we need and is why electric cars (like the $40K GM volt) will have a hard time selling.

How much was the first PC, the first VCR, or the first DVD player?

For now, pedaling will do just fine.

Thanks Peter. This LPW system seems very interesting... I wonder what is the thrust of the motor and whether it would work well replacing the rudder of an i14t inflatable.

It would be great to have it for emergency and increased range. Unfortunatelly, the Torquedo option is a bit too expensive, I am afraid...
