Why is there no Hiking stick for the Wave? Heck, it isn't even listed as an option. I've rented a Wave a few times (soloing) on Maui and wondered why Hobie doesn't include a hiking stick on the Wave model. It would help with weight distribution (when soloing) when pointing. :?:

I agree! So I made my own. I've posted photos of how I did it without drilling holes in the tiller crossbar, with conduit parts from Lowes, for about $15.

The EZ-Lock tillers are so short, you can't really sit any farther forward than the rear seat pad. I guess that's "safer" for the tourist rentals, so you don't pitchpole in heavy winds. But for light winds, you end up with the bows out of the water, and the transoms dragging noisily.

My Wave (2008) is originally equipped with a tiller extension. I don't know if hiking stick has the same meaning as tiller extension. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Yes, a Hiking Stick and a Tiller Extension are the same thing.

I've seen a photo here of the European model of the Wave, and your tillers are even shorter yet. That person commented that the boat would not be sailable without the tiller extension.

But for some reason, both the NAHCA and IWCA specifically prohibit tiller extensions for Wave class racing, regardless of rudder type. So I have to take mine off for class regattas.

Where would one find these photos?

Try this, or do a search for Tiller Extension in this forum:

All the kids that race them here, just tie the end of the main sheet to one corner of the tiller bar and steer with that when way up front. No problems and class legal (I think)

That's a great idea, simplicity at it's best. Thanks for the pics.

I guess it depends on your wind conditions.

Because the wind tends to be so good at Long Beach, I find myself hanging off the back of my WAVE to balance and keep from pitch poling as I fly.

I actually find the tiller arms in the way and have to keep the flying rudder up a little for me to fit under the arm as I hang back.

you're coming to Havaus on your Wave right? I just got switched back to the Wave from the 18 (kid can't come with me to AZ this winter) so I am hoping you'll be there.

Yep on that. Someone asked today if you could fly a hull on the Wave. I said yeah, but I don't.

I spend all my time on the back of the hull as close to the crossbar as comfortable, balancing.

A hiking stick would have to be held over my head.

10 mph winds with gusts of 17 yesterday and the opposite hull's bow plowing deeper and deeper into the water. Until loose the traveler.

You guys are lucky having great wind so much of the time!

For me, I spend most of my time sittng between the seat pads trying to balance the boat and keep the transoms from gurgling too loudly. About the only time there's enough wind to bury the lee bow, it hits out of nowhere and lasts for maybe ten seconds. Then just as I get my weight shifted back, my feet under the hiking strap and my butt over the edge, it dies or shifts 180 degrees. :x

My sailing club just had a regatta over the weekend, with races Saturday morning and afternoon, and Sunday morning. There was fairly decent wind most of the time, but only part of Saturday afternoon did it approach the 12-15 range, where I could skip the tiller extension and sit on the rear seat pad. Only once did a puff hit hard enough to lift the port hull, but it fell back down before I could enjoy the ride.

The lighter winds in the mornings gave me a chance to try out my new Spin-brella II. It really does work well in light winds, going dead-downwind. Okay, so it looks silly, but where else can you get a spinnaker for $16.99?

Oh, there was a puff strong enough to capsize it today, but unfortunately it was after I had come back to the club, and pulled it up onto shore, with the sheet still cleated. I went to unlock my sail box and heard a strange noise behind me. When I turned around, the boat is on its side in the weeds! So now I have leaves stuck on the bob.
