Hmmm, I wonder, the new wave-piercing hulls on some powered Cats show that less energy is lost if the boat penetrates the top of the swell/wave rather than bouncing over it, if the boat has a fat prow and is forced over the top of the wave then it will surely come smacking down on the other side creating an even bigger splash/spray and an up & down bucking ride ?

Agreed with Skymax. Last thing I want is a hull shape that doesn't pierce through waves/chop. Riding over waves is much slower. I prefer it how it is.

Cutting through 2-3' waves isn't too bad,
but at 5-6' waves, I'd like it to try to climb some.

There's nothing like sitting with water up to your armpits,
not being able to see anything of your boat ahead of you except the mast!

But it has always come back up :)

Aloha Dan posted about rocker design on the KFS forum and I found the clips very interesting. 8)
Looks like the Adventure hull design is similar to the Epic, with little rocker, as opposed to the conventional higher rocker sea kayak design.

This from Wiki may help:
Rocker: Length alone does not fully predict the maneuverability of a kayak: a second design element is rocker: the curvature of the kayak from bow to stern. A heavily "rockered" boat has more lengthwise curvature than a boat with little or no rocker, meaning that the effective waterline of the rockered boat is less than for a kayak with no rocker. For example, an 18-foot (5.5 m) kayak with no rocker will be entirely in the water from end to end. In contrast, the bow and stern of an 18 footer with rocker will be out of the water, so its lengthwise waterline may be only 16 ft (4.9 m). Rocker is generally most evident at the ends, and in moderation improves handling. Similarly, although a whitewater boat may only be a few feet shorter than many recreational kayaks, because the whitewater boat is heavily rockered its waterline is far shorter and its maneuverability far greater.

Hi all,
I have been reading a lot of this fantstic forum as I am planning to get an Adventure Island as soon as the bank balance allows.
Firstly, I have to say it is fantastic to see that so many people are communicating about their common interest, and helping each other out. The most impressive art is Hobie's own active invovlement. Great work Matt and the rest of the Hobie team.
Over they years I have used and loved many hobie cats, and been an avid kayaker. i think the mirage drive kayak is an amazing development from hobie. I have wanted one for a long time but been restricted by many factors (one factor being which to buy!)

aww come on leak some changes please should i buy now or later? Is it going to cost a lot to update a 09 or 08 AI to the new spec's?

My reply above... no significant changes. I expect a few minor changes, but nothing that should need to be upgraded. In my opinion... not worth missing 3-4 months of sailing waiting for a 2010 model year.

On the Dune color... it is available as a kit, but I don't think sales is planning to offer as a standard option.

After much reading and youtube watching, I am hooked on the AI
However, the colour choice, really don't like red, and not keen on yellow.
However, the dune is fantastic, but I do not understand why hobie only sells this as an upgrade kit. Here's the prices I have been given from two dealers in Australia.
Adventure Island (Red or Yellow) $4150
Adventure (all colours) $2500
Upgrade Kit (Red, Yellow or Dune) $2565
Thus, here in Oz, a Dune AI costs $5065 - $915 more than a red or yellow one.

This seems (to me) to go completely against Hobie's usual outstanding customer service. How many companies out there really listen to customers feedback, then fix any problems customers have identified and then offer the fix kit for free. This is just awesome care for customers.
Why does this level of service not appear to extend to the demand for better colour choices for the Adventure Island? Especially when Hobie is obviously already making everything needed for Dune AI.
One dealer gave a stange excuse of hobie trying to limit the number of different boats the dealers have to keep in stock, but it seems that most people are having to order their AI's anyway so I'm not sure this is a valid reason.

Matt, Thanks and congratulations to you and all at Hobie on incrediable products and such fantastic serivce that deserves this amazing following. Can you please explain why Hobie is effectively charging $AU915 more for a Dune Adventure Island, by only selling as an upgrade kit?
Cheers,
Scotty.

One thing I can tell for sure : the Dune color doesn't help at all as for fishing.
It's the fisher that makes all the difference ! Greetings to 5thofNovember 8)

Sorry Guys, never meant to insult the current owners of Red and Yellow AI's (hmm Red and Yellow, maybe theres some M&M's link here?)
Just expresing my personal taste, while trying to find out why Hobie are charging so much more for people to build their own AI!
(BTW Pirate, my motor bike is very blue, and its beaten a couple of Ducatis to date, though this was probably more reflective of the riders and not the bikes! Also, I fairly certain its not the red that make Ferrari so fast, just Shumacher :-)

Seems that Matt doesn't want to (or may not be able to) answer this question, is there any one else at Hobie who can give us an explanation?

Regional pricing across the world would be an undertandably sensitive subject likely influenced by several local factors out of the direct control of the Hobie factory Firey-Scott.
Dune is possibly the colour of choice though as it will reflect more light so reducing colour fade and possible UV damage. Has anyone suffered any UV damage to an Adventure Island?.....Pirate
