or-
Two identical Islands are sailing North with winds from the East/Southeast @ 12 mph.
Island #1 is 75ft. straight ahead of Island #2 with drive removed and cassette plugged in.
Island #2 is peddling the drive/turbo fins hard.

Is #2 gaining on #1?

Yep.....Pirate :D :D :D

Pirate Sir. Have you ever sailed the Island in 12mph plus winds?

Or anyone else for that matter? Matt?

Anyway... how can you be so sure you were catching up?

Sorry but I`ve been caught between two dentists with a hook in my mouth and have become somewhat testy paying out the nose to solve an ongoing root canal problem that has nothing to do with beer. Everyone likes to blame everything on beer.I dont think thats fair.

Thats just my-oPINion
AAaarggg arr :D

Sorry about your dental problems.

Except for fishing, almost always sail in greater than 12mph winds. The AI roughly sails at 1/2 the wind speed (My opinion), so to go faster than 6mph requires more than 12mph of wind.

I would have thought that most of us, (except Pirate, who doesn't use the daggerboard  ) sail in wind stronger than 12mph, some times.

:D :D If laughter is the panacea to all problems, then this forum is good for your health :D :D
Aledal my preference is to peddle as I sail as it gives my legs a bit of exercise and me something to do. I believe what you lose in drag from the fins, you at least pick up from being able to point higher as well as successfully tack through the wind without the possibility of getting caught in irons on the way through. My belief is that upwind I would be faster than a AI without the drive in.
(Incidentally I do take Bob's well meant comment :? relating to the dagger-board which I am sure in heavy weather upwind has got to be a great assistance to stop slip and I must remember to organise some mounting straps so I can carry it permanenty on board in future.)
On a reach I believe the drag will begin to overcome the advantage in any decent sort of wind, and downwind definately pull out the drive and replace it with the plug unless you are sailing in very light breezes when peddling would still give the advantage.

Whilst talking of dagger-boards, it wouldn't it be fantastic if Hobie could devise a 'sail-board type' system where the dagger board can be completely drawn up inside the dagger-board cavity when not needed and even stored there so not needing to always carry it as an extra...Pirate

LOL -another thing to add to your wish list Pirate! Remember what Pee Wee Herman says...
"You can live on fishes but yuh cant live on wishes" :)
Anyway - anyone who sails(except Pirate) in wild and crazy waters must surely agree the boat could use better mid length handles and a larger rudder! :)

At least one of the two 2-man AI prototypes (probably both), had the daggerboard cavity. But, one cracked and started leaking at the cavity during the Florida 2009 WaterTribe Everglades Challenge race and needed a patch. They were both fiberglass prototypes. I don't know if the hulls out of plastic could be formed or strong enough to have that feature?

January's coming... Anyone want to buy one of my 2009 gently used, souped up, AI's in Maui so I can afford the (un-anounced) 2-man? :)

You`re a mind reader Reconlon. Im curious if anyone has sailed in Winter water. I spent $750.00 on a survival suit without considering effects of very cold water on the Islands`polyethylene.Has anyone(except Pirate who only sails on lakes where a defective pin wouldnt fail if he wanted it to) attempted this?

It kills me that the A.I. is not reinforced heavily at all stress points. There is no such thing as "overkill" when it comes to structural integrity. So just revise the mold that made the boat? I worked in that field for years. Those molds are expensive. When the A.I. becomes a tandem and a new mold is made... Mr Ketterman? Dont go cheap on the plastic. We`ll deal with the extra weight/expense! :) And please carve in some better handles :)

From what I read on this forum Aledal the plastic holds up well in the cold. As for handles, I believe Hobie really should bring in extra large handles as an add-on for those beetle nut chewers out there...Pirate :D

I know we always kid around Pirate... but I never ever sail whilst drinking. Ever.
EVER. I take safety seriously.
That being said? Better handles help us "grip to the ship". That`s safety in wild water. No matter which way you look at it or intellectualize(sp) about it.
These things should be considered unless the Hobie gods look down on those that buy/use their product extensively.

#1 Rudder Pin design
#2 A larger rudder
#3 HANDLES(you know...the type hands can actually grip) :roll:DUH

On "grip to the ship", I have found myself more than once, when cutting across the face of a larger steep wave, reaching around and holding on to the bottom of the hull as I lean way over (upright) to not get thrown out of the cockpit! Better side handles would be nice then. :)

I don't think that follows Aledal just because one other person in the world, albeit Bob, happens to favour larger handles too.... :D
Your comments come from experience and experiences and always welcome at this end. And just to compliment what you said, I know you take safety seriously and would never never chew and sail at the same time....Your mate Pirate

That goes without saying Pirate but thanks for saying it anyway! You know I never take anything you say seriouslylol

I think you would love"Master & Commander".
Paul McCartney is a cheap ego maniac. I wouldnt want to meet him. Same with Crowe. Even though I like some of their stuff. Peter Weir and O`Brian are the real geniuses behind the movie. You`re missing out on something special.
