Port Hull Creaking and Groaning

I bought a used '82 Hobie 16, I previously had a '74 H-16 that seemed heavier. Have sailed it twice in high wind and today in light wind and the boat had a creaking and groaning noise that I had never before experienced in over a decade of sailing Hobie's. As I inspected it, it is coming from the port hull. Again, kind of creaks and I got it to do it on land as I had it up on the beach wheels and leaned against the hull and pulled the shroud. The pylons seem tight and there are no cracks around the pylons and the seals are tight. Any opinion on the cause? Of course I wondered if the pylon was coming loose from within the hull, so I b-lined it back to the beach.

Sailonsailor, If your gelcoat was to begin cracking around the pylons it won't be on the deck (usually), normally a crack will appear on the inboard side of the hull about 4 - 5 inches up from the bottom of the keel. The next issue of the HOTLINE will have an article on strengthening the pylon shoes and will have some photos of what to look for (cracks).
