For what it is worth, I have ZERO experience on Hobies and not enough on anything else to give an opinion on the differences betwen boats...

BUT....

I have tons of experience getting into new hobbies and sports that require gear and are quite technically oriented (SCUBA diving, rock climbing, cycling to name a few). Almost never go for the "entry" level equipment. Sometimes it is cheaper or just easier to use/setup but it is also more restrictive sooner in the learning curve. Like one poster mentioned, if your plan is to only sail a few times a year, that is different. If you have any intention of doing more than that, step up one level as it will give you more opportunity to grow with the sport.

Perhaps the Wave is not really entry level but just less complicated and more forgiving, it amounts to the same thing. It would be a shame to grow out of it in a season or two only to have to start looking for the next step.

Jeff.

:D Hobie 16 Don't settle for less, with jib or without, you will be fine, I would choose my weather as thats were the problems start, 10Knots you shall have fun and learn at the same time,30 Knots you're going to be in a world of hurt. Take a few lessons is always a good idea and this will boost you're sailing Confidence. You have picked a great sport and boat enjoy and don't look back.
