Had excellent weather today, my second time out since fixing up my family's 1980 H16.
Sunny, around 80 degrees, and (for the most part) steady wind from the west between 11-14 mph. Location was Stony Creek Lake, one of the metroparks around Detroit.
I brought along an old friend of mine, Joel, who hasn't sailed much.
We were reaching up and down the lake from noon to 5 or so, I was trying out some new settings with the mast rake.
On one reach though, I don't really know what happened, it was so fast. We were really close to flying hull I think, Joel was out on the trap in a harness, I was on the starboard aft corner of the trampoline. The wind shifted with a gust under the bow which lifted us, Joel was in the process of shifting back a bit along the starboard hull... and suddenly the bows were pointed in the air, he was swinging around behind me, and we were in the water. The boat sort of spun like a top on its side though, was really wierd, bows in the air. (I think this was due to the new leak in the port hull)
After making sure Joel was off the trap line and not under anything, I got it to stop rolling, popped all the sheets loose, and climbed the starboard hull to bring it back down (bows were aimed skyward when it settled), it's got a hawaiian rig and we didn't have any trouble popping it back up after we rotated it accordingly. This was the first time I've ever flipped a hobie!
It was a lot of fun, and best of all no damage to crew or boat! Sailed for another couple hours after the flip, Joel got back out on the trap again too. Total was 5 and a half hours on the lake today!
