Me and my brother-in-law just got back from a trip to Cabo. We kayak fished for two days in the Pacific with Marlin Masters. Unfortunately, the striped marlin bite is about two weeks behind schedule, but the Dorado fishing was great.
Marlin Masters has a fleet of Hobie Outbacks that they load onto a sportfisher to take you to the fishing grounds. The boat stays with you while you peddle around trolling live baits. On the first day we had multiple hookups on good size Dorado. We had a guy added on to the trip from Utah that had never been in a kayak before. Of course, he hooks up on a nice striped marlin! He fought the fish for three hours (including a gear change when his reel hopelessly backlashed and his line was cut and tied to another set up).
My brother-in-law also hooked up with a nice marlin, but it broke off after only a short while. As the water finally cools a bit, the marlin bite will get red hot over the next month or so. If you want to catch a marlin in the kayak, this is the place to go.
The Dorado action was very good and they really are a blast in the kayaks. I’ll be back sooner than later!
