Unfortunatly My Garmin is now not reliable. Often I will finish a session and find it turned itself off. The bateries are still strong. It even happens in the car, sitting on the dash (nothing touching it to turn it off). I suspect failing solder connections agrivated by heat.
Does anyone else have this kind of trouble with theirs?

My Magellan Platinum has a setting where if a key is not pressed, it shuts itself off after so many minutes. You should check your setup menu and see if Garmin has a similar setting.

Is there something like an "energy saving" mode in the etrex? because mine seems to measure speed only in large intervals after a certain time.

I also thought of taking my iphone on the boat, but since I already lost a mobile phone while sailing (capsized and waterproof bag wasn´t closed properly  ) I only sail with an old one.

Is there a GPS with a display with big letters (such as on yachts) which could be mounted under the boom or somewhere where it does not affect sailing?

Do these Garmin foretrex work good? It seems to me that their a bit too large to wear them the whole day long.
