Yes, definitely interesting. On one hand, Hobie has built some really cool sailing features in the basic design (dual rudder controls, high speed rudder, centerboard for example) that might be relatively useless on a tandem pedaling kayak. But on the other hand, the size and shape of the hull suggest something unique and distinct from the other tandems -- speed potential, spaciousness and storage that is definitely lacking with the other tandems, superior offshore and expedition capabilities and the ability to comfortably accommodate larger users.
In their Mirage kayak line-up Hobie has 4 hard shell singles, 3 inflatables and 2 hard shell tandems. I think this boat appears to be distinct enough to add a new dimension to the tandem line-up. When I get a chance to demo one, I will have a big interest in its kayak capability in addition to its sailing characteristics.
Having invested in the development of the new TI, I am hopeful that Hobie will see a spin-off opportunity with an upgradeable "TA" version in the near future if not right away. Perhaps it's just a matter of the company feeling confident that there are enough interested customers to warrant a jumbo tandem.
