5 Dragoons , 9 Hobie 14’s and 44 Hobie 16’s entered this year’s National Championships, hosted by the PYC at Vetch’s Beach 03-06 April 2015. Whilst the pre event weather forecasts were grim, reality provided excellent sailing conditions. The Race Management team led by Doug and Judy Allison did a fantastic job and managed to get in 11 races over the 4 days, so plenty of good sailing was enjoyed.
The 16 class was dominated by the Cape Teams with William and Lucinda Edwards netting 12 points to Blaine and Roxy Dodds’ 14.
It was interesting to see Durban’s Andrew Heathcote on 2 hulls and he showed that a good sailing brain works on anything that sails.
The 14’s also saw close racing at the top of the fleet with Garth Louden taking the win from Greg de Beyer on countback. Evergreen Al Gorlei ( who recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of his 50th birthday ) is evidence that sailing is a life long sport.
The Dragoon’s were led by Sven Paton and Cameron Parle.
By all accounts both the local and visiting sailors thoroughly enjoyed the event and displayed yet again that Vetch’s is truly one of the premier sailing venues in SA.
Kudos to Regatta Chairman Peter Hall assisted by his wife Linda, Beach Master Malcolm Gibson, PYC sailing coordinator Lucy De Freitas, Wayne Smith, Al Gorlei, Peta Harrison,Sean Fennessy, Greg De Beyer, Moses on The King, the PYC’s Commodore and Flag Officers for staging such a fantastic event.
