Kirby, what are you using to determine speed? 18.8 knots (or was it miles?) is ripping. Do you know what the wind speed was that time?

I was using an GPS Etrex Legend by Garmin which records about anything you want to know about movement. And that is in MPH. It also records average speed and so far my best average speed for a day was around 15mph. That is from launch to land in about a 4hr run. I also like to look at my course plots to see how the wind bends along the shore lines on some of the lakes I sail on.

I have had the best luck keeping the Getaway flat and the support out of the water with a 180 lb crew on the trap. On days with gusts in the 25-35 range, I see 20 and 21 mph readings (Garmin Forerunner 201). I have yet to break 22.

I think the boats speed is a little deceiving. In heavy air, say 20-30 mph, I could stay up with most the H-16's and even pass a few. The thing I didn't like was not being able to bury the hull without slowing down. And when the lake was choppy I would bounce more than I liked. Not being able to cut through the water on a choppy day like the 16's also slowed the boat down. But is a very fun boat, especially witout the wings.

Few things:

1. The jib rigging is a joke. Why not just put a standard halyard on the darn thing?

2. I think the very front x-bar for the forward tramp is a hinderance. It's prob there for hull support more than anything else, but it is a wave catcher.

3. Weight... it's not easy moving it around on a beach by yourself. Hopefully you have friends.

4. Every boat should have an adjustable downhaul. A hook, two pulleys and a swivel block is what I've installed on the majority of these.

But overall, the Getaway is great for what it is, a recreational catamaran.
