Daggerboard marking

How have forum members marked their daggerboards to indicate when the boards are raised enough when landing? I've thought about painting a line across the daggerboards to show where this spot is for easy reference and peace of mind. What other ways are there to do this?

I mark mine for all the way up and for downwind sailing. Downwind they need to fill the well front to rear so all the way up is bad, and slow. I tape the deck and use a sharpie to mark them. It also keeps right and left boards right and left because the mark is on the inside only.

Is there/should there be a difference between right and left?

No, there shouldn't be a difference...it seems like boards get seated in the gasket material favoring one side or the other over time making them easier to raise and lower. In theory, the boards and trunks are identical.

years ago, I started using 1/4" red automotive pinstripe tape to mark the daggerboards for the raised position and downhaul locations. Liked it better than markers because it was neater.

Thanks for the chance to exonerate myself I was thinking one thing and typed another.

Hobie 18 Rule 1.3 states "Anti-chafing and shimming pads may be added to the dagger board trunk to improve fit and reduce wear. ..."

Actually, full "gaskets" are illegal. Most use the Hobie shim kit or glue carpet pieces in the trunks to keep the boards stable.

I've used paint pens available at hardware stores to paint a 1/4" strip on my daggers. Use the hull as a straight edge and drag pen across dagger while its in hull pocket.

I know my boards are fully up when the top of the board is even with my trap handles. But that is different on each boat, you can find a reference point like that on your boat though.

My daggerboards at this point only fit on a specific side ... this is because over the years of fixing the daggerboard wells and repairing the daggerboards each side is slightly different. Sailing/racing in NJ in the "bays w/ sandbars everwhere is tough on boards and wells ... you get REAL good at fixing them

You throw the boat together because you are behind schedule .... are late to the first start and have sailed downwind to the racing area .... go to put the "boards" down and they jam ... you find yourself yelling at the crew "swap the boards ... swap the boards ... hoping you can get them un-jammed quickly and swapped ... doesn't make for a good start!!!

So now I ALWAYS check to verify that my boards go up and down freely BEFORE I get ready to race

I guess my colored electrical tape stripe is to low tech,red for starboard green for port.I should say stripes.
By the way when my boat is on the trailer I marked the downwind depth at about 6 in. sticking out of the well, just about where the dagger profile starts
to fill the well.Is this about right?
