That's BS, plain and simple. There are only two things that you would have to be more careful about. One is beaching, but every boat should be retrieved from the water with cat-trax. Two is staying away from other boats, which a good collision isn't going to do any of the older boats any good at all either. The F18's are frickin' tanks compared to any of the other modern designs where they're all built as light as possible. Most of the manufacturers have trouble getting boats up to minimum weight when it comes to the F18 class, and like I said it is a Tiger hull. The FXone is built lighter than the Tiger, last summer I there was two of us literally pounding upwind in chop that was 5ft tall, and no more than 10ft from crest to crest, and in better than 20mph winds on Lake Superior. When we left it was supposed to be blowing 18mph, after 30min on the water it increased substantially.

Trust me, with proper care it'll survive the dreaded flat fresh waters of SoDak just fine.

Relax there bud.... I am talking about beaching the boat, I do not points race so I pack up provisions for the day and yes we beach hop, and no I do not tow beach wheels with me. And yes Hobie sailing is turning into a rich mans sport. NOT GOOD.

I've got the perfect boat for beach hopping. I've done Tahoe and the Monterey Bay. Lots of payload, and it's difficult to damage the hulls, and...they're not that pricey.

No ,but a guy at our lake has one ,it works fine for him, but he wants to sell it since he has been sailing around other hobies. I think the boat would be great for a rental outfit. But if you are even slightly into performance I do not recommend it.

The Getaway, Wave and Bravo... all plastic product... are some of the best selling Hobie Cats of all time. They are FAR from "junk". They are perfect product for the average user. Durable and reasonably high performance. Nothing wrong with the old Hobie 18, but I wouldn't run it up on a rocky beach too often. The plastic products are worry free fun.

The Pearl is a really close to being a glass version of the Getaway. This is a re-do of the Pacific they built many years ago... nothing really new about it other than rubber deck patches. The Pacific was never imported due to the conflict with the Hobie 18 at the time and then the Getaway in more recent years.

It is very similar to a product we have considered in recent years, but we have not felt that the market could support it.

We have to pick and choose from what Hobie Cat Europe offers. We can not support each and every one. It doesn't make sense in this market.

Thanks for the well researched data that you painstakingly collected and so eloquently presented here on the forums about the Getaway. Your opinion is such an asset to those of us that actually sail the Getaway.

OK Like it or not, my question remains... is it a $15K or a $20K boat or even a +$20K boat??

I like it, I do own a Getaway and I have sailed that boat to the edge and back, and I'm looking for more. I have sailed H16, H18, Tigers other F18's and even a N20. The F18 fits the need for my new boat among the boats I just mentioned. However I'm afraid of the rigging time, since I do a lot of pleasure and spontaneous sailing from docks and beaches. I'd also like a spinnaker or a hooter, and like the idea of the furling "spinnaker" or hooter in this case. Single handing occasionally a spinnaker with a snuffer would be a handful, but a with a furling spinnaker and jib that fear is gone.

The Pearl seems to be using modified Tiger hulls, and I've been surprised at the durability of the Tiger hulls, so I'm not worried about it being to fragile for my use.

I've been pleased with the performance of the Getaway, sailed right it can keep up with an older H16, especially when it gets choppy and the added buoyancy keeps the bow out of the water.. Top notated GPS speed on the Getaway is 15.9kts I've been there twice and every time, the bow digs in and I do a 180, two up I can't get it above 15.9kt... my crew does not like the chase for 16kts anymore and we stop at 15kts now :)

The last part was for those of you disliking the Getaway and never trying it, or listening/observing perhaps a not so skilled skipper.

Honestly man, I'd pick up a used Tiger, stuff some wings on it and call it good.

Daggerboards aren't any more difficult than the rudders to deal with. When I'm coming into the beach, singlehanded that is, I unlock both rudders, raise one, pull the leeward board entirely and feather the upwind board as neccessary. Or if its downwind to the beach I pull em' both and don't even worry about it.

The one and only thing I don't like about having daggers is that when I'd get on a strange lake, or a lake with lots of little fingers, I just had to go exploring with my H16. I don't do that anymore.

I've never used a furler that I thought worked well, but to be fair every one that I've used was probably past its prime.

Hey, I don't need to fight to prove I'm right, I don't need to be forgiven, it's only Getaway wasteland !! 8)

I think you are right. You can get a used F18 for $9K, with better performance. And I can always put $2K in a savings account for dagger board damage since I'm so concerned :) and still come out ahead...

Thanks
