What's the reason so many marinas have what's called "Wake Speed" posted on buoys. What the heck is "Wake Speed?" How fast does a small power boat need to go in order to make a wake?

When entering a marina where there are breaking waves you have to deal with is it safer to speed up and try to out run the wave or to follow the broken wave in?

If a fiberglass & resin constructed boat catches on fire in your harbor, what is the main source of fuel for the fire?

Between a sailboat under sail power and a motor boat towing a skier, which has the right of way?

yeah, you're right....got side tracked. Here goes Trigg- If a large powerboat with limited maneuverability is coming down a navigational channel inside a marina and you're on your Hobie 16 tacking left & right working your way out of the marina for a day sail who has to yield the right of way to avoid collision?

Ok, well normally, Sail has right of way over motor. Common sense, in this case could rule. If the power boat cna't maneuver and the Hobie can.... stay the heck out of the way

i.e. A freighter will not move out the way for a smaller vessel.

What is the visual distress signal requirement for a 20' power boat?

In CAN a boat over 19'8" must carry 6 flares, a water tight flashlight, a sound signalling device.

Which boat needs to have a mechanical blower and what is the purpose of a blower? A) a power boat with a large outboard motor. B) a 15' power boat with an inboard motor. C) all sailboats over 20'

A blower is needed for any board motor boat. It is also required that the blower is run for atleast 4 mintues being starting the motor. The bloaer removes combustable fumes from the engine department.

You are out on the Police boat at night and you see another boat crossing your bow in the near distance. The boat displays a red light which you can see. What are you supposed to do? If all you see from the other boat at night is a white light, which direction is the boat headed in relation to yours?

Red light. Port has right of way. Steer clear.

White light. Stern light. Assuming the boat is overtaking, must steer clear.

Is a boat required to have an anchor on board?

Depends. 6m or less can have either an anchor or manual propelling device. Boats between 6m and 8m must have an anchor

What does the phrase "Red right returning" mean?

Proceeding from seaward to upstream the red buoy must be on the right side

Wake speed can be posted for a number of reasons. Most commonly, wake in some area can cause serious environmental damage, wakes can cause damage to boats on docks etc. Different boats can create different wakes. It is the responsibility of the operator to monitor the wake.
